Italy in January. Am I crazy?
My husband and I have to cancel our trip to Italy in October. We are considering January. Does anyone have experience to share on the weather and just how cold it will be? We are flying in and out of Rome and planned to spend our time from Tuscany south.

I have been to Rome both at Christmas time and once in February. The trip in February we were lucky. The days were sunny and pretty cold, but very much like our Febs. here in Atlanta GA (not freezing). Most days I did not need a hat or gloves. A coat was necessary on most days, but one day a heavy sweater was ok. BUT, when I went a Christmas we had much more rain and I remember it being very cold on a couple days. So, I don't think you are crazy at all to travel there in January! It sure beats Paris and London (and I wouldn't even count them out at that time). If you are farther north than Atlanta GA, then you will probably have better weather than in your hometown!

I'm sorry about the cancellation, but the weather in January shouldn't be a big deal. My husband and I spent a week in Tuscany in February a few years ago and it was in the high 40's - low 50's (farenheit) in Tuscany. It was certainly warm enough to be comfortable walking around outside most of the day in a sweater and jacket. I brought my long wool coat (it was below freezing at home - NYC), but that was too heavy. I bought a leather jacket in Florence (planned purchase) and wore that for the duration of the trip. I certainly didn't need a hat, but gloves were a good idea early in the morning and at night.

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BEEN TO ITALY IN JAN TWICE. WE ARE FROM COASTAL SC USA. WE FOUND ROME TO BE GREAT BOTH TIMES. SUNNY MID 50'S TO HI 60'S. NO RAIN FOR US EITHER TIME. NO CROWDS PERFECT TIME AND LOTS OF SALES IN STORES. IN VENICE,VERONA, AND MILAN THE WEATHER WAS COLDER BUT LAYERS DID FOR US. WE HAD SNOW IN VERONA AND MILAN BUT NO TROUBLE GETTING ABOUT WALKING OR TAXIS. HIGH 30'S-LOW 50'S. I DO NOT MIND COLD WEATHER .YOU CAN ALWAYS BOP INTO BAR FOR COFFEE OR WINE. HAVING THE SITES W/NO LINES IS JUST WODERFUL- WE WALKED RIGHT INTO THE LAST SUPPER AND STAYED AS LONG AS WE WANTED. WE WRE THERE IN 01 AND 03 FOR 2WEEKS EACH TIME.FOR US THRE IS NO BAD TIME TO TRAVEL IN ITALY.

January temperatures (celsius)
Rome : 5-11
Florence : 2-10
Milan : 1-6
Venice : 2-7
Assisi : 1-9
Naples : 7-12
Capri : 8-13
Taormina : 7-14
Southern Italy is milder in January and days are mostly sunny but you could experience occasionally bitter cold spells. In febrary 2012 there was snow in Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice. I'd rather suggest novemeber, except for foggy norther areas.
