Italy Honeymoon in September

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon in Italy, but are a little confused about which direction (literally) we should go. We were planning on 10-12 days, leaving around September 15. We haven't booked anything yet, so I'm very open to suggestions. We have 3 areas that we are considering; but, don't know which to choose.

He really wants to see Rome. I would love to see Florence and relax in the Tuscany countryside; but, then I also want to see Capri/Almafi Coast for the beach and beautiful scenery. I don't think we can realistically plan to see all three of these regions; but, we can't decide which two to choose from. I figure we will probably do Rome; but, what direction should we head from there, north or south?

As far as interests, we both want to do sightseeing; but, also want to have some time to relax and just enjoy the scenery, whether it be vineyards or a beach. We are both foodies, so we want to make sure we are going to regions/cities with great food. Also, I've been to Italy (Tuscany, Verona, Venice); but he has not.

What's best for a honeymoon, what's most romantic? (I'm not interested in Venice, have already been there and would rather see other parts of Italy.) Is it still beach weather in mid to late September? How many days would you suggest spending in any of these areas?

Thanks!

Hi. I'm Martina, married to an Italian guy and have been living in Rome for 8 years. I will be happy to give you some suggestions on how to spend your honeymoon in Italy.

- September is a great month for visiting Italy. The main reason, of course, is the weather. It is definitely not as hot as in July or August. In my opinion, the beach weather is better at the beginning of September. However, if you plan to come to Italy for the second half of Sept then you may also expect some rain.

- Italy is spectacular and you cannot see everything in few days. Remember that you are honeymooning - so no stress, no rush but relax and enjoying each other. You can still came back for anniversary, can't you?

- Here is my suggestion: fly to Rome, stay here 5 nights (consider you will feel jet legged first day so you won't be able to see a lot and there are thousand things to do in Rome; you may also go for a day trips like: Ostia Antica, Tivoli, Castelli Romani, ...), then go to Florence, take a fast train (http://www.trenitalia.com/), stay there 1 or 2 nights and then go to Amalfi Coast (take a train from Florence to Sorrento and in Sorrento get the local train the Circumvesuviana). Amalfi Coast is beatiful. You will find here some peace after Rome and Florence city life (sightseeing).

- You may combine Tuscany and for example Cinque Terre for the next visit to Italy.

- You said you love food. Then you are in the right country. Wherever you go, you will eat great. Italian food is delicious. So no worry for this. I mean it's anyway a good thing to have a small list of recommended restaurants with you.

- What is the best for Honeymoon? Doesn't matter what city you choose, the best of honeymoon is your love that you may express to each other. And what's the most romantic? Well, it's you that make everything romantic.

- Congratulations!

Have you already booked plane tickets? To Rome? If not, you could fly into either Pisa or Florence and start your trip in Tuscany 4-5 days, train to Amalfi area, 3-4 days, train to Rome 4-5 days.

Fly into Naples, 3-4 days Amalfi coast, train to Orvieto or Chiusi and pick up a car to tour Tuscany 3-4 days, drop car, train to Rome, fly home from Rome.

If you've already booked flights to Rome, train to Florence upon arrival. Florence 2 nights, pick up car, drive through Tuscany 2-3 nights, drive to Amalfi 3 nights, train to Rome 3-4 nights.

With 10/12 days, I would pick no more than 3 destinations. Either Rome, the AC and Florence or Rome, Florence and the Tuscan countryside.

As kybourbon says, fly into your first stop and home from your last to avoid having to backtrack.

Amalfi coast and maybe Capri. Spectacular views and very romantic. Not sure of your price range and what you want to do. We spent 6 nights in a Positano ( Le Sirenuse) and 3 in Conca dei Marini (Monastero Santa Rosa). MSR is way up high with wonderful views. It is small and perfect for couples. The grounds are so well done and lots of places to relax and sun yourself alone or by the Infiniti pool. Their spa is amazing. It is out of the way but they have a shuttle to Amalfi.

We also went to Tenuta San Francesco in Tramonti with Swirl the glass. It's a beautiful winery and vineyard that serves a delicious home made lunch with the tasting. We loved it.

I agree, 10-12 days would be not enough time to see all of the places you mentioned.
Consider one of these itineraries:
1. Rome; and Florence/Tuscany
2. Rome; and Amalfi Coast
3. Florence/Tuscany; and Cinque Terre (alternative to Amalfi Coast)
