We are planning a 12 night honeymoon in Italy in May. Our current itinerary is Florence two nights, Tuscany region three nights, Positano four nights and Rome three nights. Are we trying to do too much? We would like some beach, country and city time. This is our first trip to Italy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nikki, You have a good start on a great trip, but I am curious if you plan to drive or use the trains--that would alter my suggestions. If driving, I would stay outside of Florence and do the Tuscany thing from one location.
I would then go to Positano and wind up in Rome, having dropped the car.
Bob...Thanks for the quick reply. We will fly into Rome, train to Florence, pick up rental car as we leave Florence, drive Tuscany, Amalfi and return car in Rome when we get there. I gather from your reply that our trip sounds reasonable and not too spread out?

Bucket o'cold water here
--We went to Italy on our honeymoon in '97, and I can't imagine a better destination, BUT I think you're trying to cover a lot of territory in not much time, and during a period when you may not be in high-gear sightseeing mode anyway. If you want beach, how about Castiglioncello? Then see some more Tuscany and one city. I like Florence much more than I like Rome, but I'm sure you'll find people who will disagree, and who am I to disagree?
My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Italy on our honeymoon in June 1997. Here was our itinerary:
Rome 2 nights
Orvieto 1 night
Florence 2 nights
Venice 2 nights
Lake Como (Varenna)2 nights
Cinque Terre (Vernazza) 2 nights
Assissi 1 night
Rome (airport) 1 night
We travelled by train and didn't feel too rushed. So I think your itinerary looks about right.
Nikki, I think your itinerary is great. I like your mixture of beach, country and city. It should be a trip you will enjoy and treasure always.
Nikki, Yes, that looks very good. Your
only decisions should be where to stay in Tuscany---consider either Cortona or
Montepulciano as a base, both with good
access to A-1 and Siena---and then whether to stay in Positano or Sorrento
on the coast. Positano is magical, but
trying to park a car is tough. What the
heck---this is a honeymoon, go for it.
Nikki, many years ago we spent our honeymoon in Positano. Memories were so good that we went back for our silver wedding anniversary, and were very happy to find it hadn't changed much. The second time, we wanted to see more of Italy. (Planning was fun.)
Our itinerary:
Flew into Rome -- 2 nights
Train/bus to Positano (more fun than driving)-- 4 nights
Hydrofoil to Naples, then train to Florence-- 2 nights
Picked up rental car, poked around Tuscany and Cinque Terre, then north to Maggiore in the lakes -- 6 nights.
Flew back from Milano.
It was a wonderful trip, and I can't wait to go again. If I was in honeymoon mode, I might opt for more Positano (very relaxing) and less sightseeing!
Buon viaggio~

your trip sounds great. My husband and I did 12 days in Tuscany and Umbria in October and stayed at two fabulous places I recommend highly. One in Radda(in Chianti) is called Podere Terrano. It's a working vineyard and the accomodations are in a very old stone farmhouse. The owners are wonderful and each evening you sit around the larege farmtable with wonderful food/wine and talk about your journies that day. There were two couples ther on thei honeymoon when we were there, one from CA. and the other from Japan. The other place is between Perugia and Lago Trassimeno(sp?)in Umbria. It's an amazing villa called Villa de Mont Solare. It's amazing. 120 acres of olive groves, a clay tennis court and a swimming pool that looks over the groves. Have a wonderful time. I can't wait to go back. The people are great and you certainly can't beat the food ,wine and scenery.
