8 adults traveling in Oct 2007. Flying in and out of Rome. Staying in Porto Santo Stefano. Want to do day trips to surrounding area (Porto Santo Stefano) and want to visit Rome, Florence, Venice and Pompeii. Looking for suggestions of how best to do all this: ex. hire a driver for some, if so, recommendations please. Train to Venice - where do we board near Porto Santo Stefano? Suggestions for travel to Pompeii.
We have 18 days and are considering 2 rental cars to give us flexibility. But would love to have a local guide for some of the side trips. Suggestions appreciated.

None of those destinations are feasible day trips from PSS. How did you pick that location?
We're staying at friend's villa in Porto Santo Stefano. One couple has stayed at this home before and taken day trips to local area, Florence and Rome. Are you saying it's not possible? Know we'll need to perhaps take a train to Venice and Pompeii.
I've never been so am I mislead?
You need a good map and some time at www.trenitalia.com There is not any train until you get to the mainland---about :20 if you have a car. Then, you could spend about 3 hours and transfer trains at least twice to get to Florence. Do you want 7 hours in transport that day? Rome would be doable--perhaps only 4 hours of transport in total. Pompeii and Venice are further--Venice is a full day trip.
There are some nice day trips within two hours from there if you have a car. It will be tough by rails. You will love PSS--take the ferry over to Giglio. Good luck !
