Fairhope, I don't know but I have always found (unless one is in a small village) the pharmacist speak enough English you should not have any problem.
Also you no doubt will want an over the counter med so you will no doubt be able to identify what you need.

Have a good trip and don't overeat all the wonderful Italian food!

Also, agree about RPhs speaking english - have been to several pharamcies in various european countries - and to a man (or women) they all spoke excellent english.

Either in English or any romance language (Spanish, French, Italian, etc)medical terminology derives from Latin, which makes communication easy with the pharmacy staff. Comprende.

Lovetaly : I think you are right--at the only pharmacy I could find open in Bangkok on a celebration day, the cute pharmacist spoke english. She also had what would be a prescription item here as a OTC.

Oh Fairhope, me too!!! Don't know why but it always happens. There is a lot of OTC I cannot take but I always pack Advil Liquid Gels because never sure if I can get them oversees. As Miguel said, medicines are latin derived so that is a big help. I happened to think, after my first post to you that I do have a friend in Italy (Florence) who is a pharmacist and the funny thing is she is the one friend I have that does NOT
speak one word of English. It is too funny. You should hear our conversations. Someone should tape them.

And yes, often one can get OTC meds that require a prescription in US.

Do you think maybe we "notice" more than we do at home not feeling well because we are not a home and of course do not want to lose a moment of vacation time? Right now I feel a cold coming on. No big deal but if I was traveling I would think "oh no!".

I was looking all over a pharmacy in Rome trying to find Vaseline for my poor toes (too much walking), not asking anyone because I had no idea how to ask for it in Italian. Finally the clerk comes up to me (she didn't speak any English) and I just decide to ask for Vaseline, which she promptly handed to me.

Bring some rolaids or tums with you. If you need more show the wrapper to the pharmacist.

Ann41, LOL as I always as amazed that the products are like ours. Sometimes I think why pack anything. Just take an empty carryon and after arriving just go shopping and stock up.

By the way, that makes me remember, UPIM which is sort of like our Target carries almost everything one would need. Not RX though. But creams, shampoos, deoderants, etc. etc.

Has anyone tried the Italian flu medicine Actigrip? It's great stuff,that and Prosecco kept me rolling along in Florence last year when I should have been horizontal!

massagediva, good grief I wish I could get several friends in Italy to take Actigrip! They have been whining for about anywhere (depending on the friend) from 4 to 10 days how sick they are. I am almost ready to make flight reservations thinking there may be at least one funeral anyday now.

And they all drink Prosecco, but obviously not enough.
