Italian car rental one way drop fees
We are hoping to rent a car for a few days at a time on our trip. I was hoping to rent in Zurich to drive to Venice, but I'm being told the one way drop fee alone is $300 - $500 US. Ouch! Our other rentals would also be one way. Am I going to find high drop charges even within Italy from one city to another? Thanks for any information. Also, any recommendations on which rental agency to use as far as price and service.

You usually pay dearly for cross-border drop-off in Europe, and one-way to Italy seems particularly expensive. There is normally no drop-off fee within Italy with one of the majors, though there may be a minimum rental of several days to a week, and certain luxury cars can only be turned in at selected locations.

We've decided to take the train Zurich to Milan and pick up a rental car there...eliminating the huge drop charge. I've gotten a rate for 10 days pick up Milan drop off Rome for an Opel Corsa automoatic with ultd mileage and insurance included for $627 U.S. dollars. Comments? We're using auto europe. Thanks.

I think you can get an Italian car at the rental agencies in Lugano, Switzerland - - train from Zurich to there?
Or if you absolutely need a car IN Switzerland, rent Zurich to Lugano. Sometimes, they will actually let you keep the same car (and forego the drop charge) even though you are starting a separate rental (this makes no sense why they will do this, but I had it happen at Strasbourg - - for Germany/France rentals)
Best wishes,
Rex
