I've stayed all over London, but if you can afford it, try the Knightsbridge area or the Sloane Square area. This past time, I stayed in a lovely wee hotel near the British Museum and had a blast and didn't pay anywhere near what you pay in K and SS.
There's so much to see in London that I would hesitate to send you across to Paris. You'll find your days quite full enough without taking an extra trip. If you're only in London for a week, I'd stay there and enjoy it.
The dress code is the same as any large city...you see everything! I'd take regular comfortable clothing with maybe one or two nice outfits if you decide to go to the theatre or out to a fancy dinner or nice afternoon tea in one of the large hotels (Browns, Ritz, etc.)

Button,
We've stayed at the Marriott in Groverner Square, (near Hyde Park & the American embassy) and at the Marriott Swiss Cottage (near Regent's Park) and loved both places. We felt safe all over London.
Read the post "Best Wishes for my sister Amy's trip." It has lots of great suggestions for things to do in London.
Have a great time.

We're leaving on March 6th. Can't Wait!!

Check out www.eurostar.com for details of trains and fares London-Paris. The journey takes about three hours, so it's possible to do a day-trip, but if you've only got a week here, you might find it a bit exhausting - plus juggling a third currency..

I haed good luck a few years ago with www.180096hotel.com. Found a decent double room at a good location for under $100/nt. Regards - Tom

A day trip to Pris is indeed possible -- but I would not recommend it. It would be a very long day and you would not do justice to Paris in a couple of hours, anymore than you could to London in a couple of hours.
Bayswater is another area of London that is very safe and lots of reasonably priced hotels. It is along the north side of Hyde and Kensington Parks. I liked it because I enjoyed walking in the parks. Bayswater tube station or Paddington rail station. If you are coming in on the Heathrow express, it terminates at Paddington.
