Issues with reentering Italy (from the U.S) after student visa has expired

Issues with reentering Italy!

I am an American, and I have a six month student visa (for Italy) that expires on July 3rd. Due to a family emergency, I had to return to the U.S two weeks before my visa expires. My mother plans on flying to Italy on the 2nd of July (to arrive in Rome on the 3rd) for a two week vacation, and I would like to go with her. Technically, this is the day that my student visa expires. Couldn't I go travel for two weeks on a tourist visa? I have tried asking the employees at my local consulate office and they will not give me a direct answer.

The one issue I find with everything is that, back when I arrived in Italy in January, I applied for a permesso di soggiorno. However, I never received the permit before leaving last week. I don't have a number or "code" to find the status of the application. But, nonetheless, I applied fully/had my fingerprints taken at the questura/etc. The consulate office says I can ONLY reenter Italy on a tourist visa if I have proof of having applied for a permesso di soggiorno. Still....wouldn't my information be in the system? I have done everything by the book, yet made the mistake of not keeping the application receipt (or, more so, losing it). My biggest fear is that we will arrive at the airport, only to have the authorities say I must wait 90 days before reentering Italy!

Thanks,
Ann
