Isle of Skye: Car hire in Inverness or Kyle?

Jump to last reply

I'm planning a September trip to Scotland. I'll be flying into Edinburgh, staying there for a few days, then touring the Isle of Skye, and then coming back to fly home out of Edinburgh again.

I was originally planning to hire a car in Edinburgh and drive to Skye from there. I enjoy road trips, and I like having the freedom to stop and get out wherever I want. However, as an American, I'm feeling a bit trepidatious about driving in a right hand drive car on the left side of the road, and I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy that drive. So I'm thinking I may take a train from Edinburgh to either Inverness or Kyle of Lochalsh, and hire the car there instead. That way I'd avoid the urban traffic around Edinburgh, which I think would probably be the most challenging part for me.

I see that most of the major rental companies have branches in Inverness, whereas the places in Kyle appear to be small local businesses that charge more, and I would think might be less convenient to deal with.

So I'm inclined to get the car in Inverness. Is that the right decision?
