Ischia

Hi,

What is Ischia like? I'm particularly looking at Sant' Angelo. Is it a good place to swim, relax, have nice food and few drinks at night? It's going to be mine and my fiances first holiday for a very long time, so i want something special We will be staying for about 6 day. Is there plenty things to do?
Would you recommend any other places to stay in Ischia instead of San't Angelo?
How is it like with travelling over there? To Amalfi coast for example, or Pompeii?
We will be flying to Naples, so i thing we will stay in Naples for a couple of days and visit Vesuvius, and then for the rest of the holiday, we want to stay by the beach. Have nice walks etc. something romantic
Please can you recommend? I've never been there before and the budget is limited

Hello! My friend and I visited Ischia in early October (4 days/3 nights). S. Angelo is a very small, but charming town. We went to S. Angelo for the sole purpose of going to the natural hot springs (Sorgeto) - which were really fun! (A small boat took us to the springs. They can also be accessed from Panza by foot.)

We stayed near Ischio Porto at Grifo Hotel - which was wonderful. We had a balcony with a sea view. The staff was very attentive. And, if the weather turns foul, you can enjoy the free spa at the hotel.

We walked almost everywhere. The bus system left a lot to be desired. October certainly isn't high season, but, the buses were crammed full.

If you look at a map of the island, and draw a line from Ischia Porto to Panza, we explored to the west of the line. So, I can't speak for the other portion.

We liked Lacco Ameno - found good sea views and good restaurants. If you want long walks on the beach you might have to walk back and forth - the ones we saw were short.

When are you going? I wouldn't use an island as a base for day trips to the Amalfi coast. It will cost each of you almost 40 euros for a RT ticket on the ferry. And, the weather can be a huge factor. We almost didn't get off the island the day we were scheduled to leave because of rough seas (again, time of the year is important).

We agreed, if we had to do it over, we would stay in Napoli (which I loved) and make a day trip to Ischia to seek out its gems.

There are no direct ferries between Ischia and the Amalfi Coast and very limited runs to Sorrento. It is a beautiful island but if your objective is to sightsee as well as relax, you may need to stick to the mainland as ferries are expensive and as I said, infrequent except to and from Naples.

For clarification, the RT ferry fare I was referring to was Ischia to Napoli. Sorrento isn't part of the Amalfi coast, but, it's a good place to explore the area - it has good transportation links.
