Is this a realistic idea?

We have booked the first half of our trip in May. We arrive into Zurich on 22 May and will head directly to Lindau for one night, staying at Hotel Reutemann und Seegarten. We will take an early 7:30 am train on 23 May, arriving into Salzburg around noon. We are staying three nights at ACHAT Plaza Zum Hirschen. We will spend three nights there exploring the city, the lake towns, Eagles Nest, etc.

My wife would very much like to visit Dachau. If we take a 7:30 am train from Salzburg to Munich and check our luggage at the train station, we can be at Dachau by 10:40. How long should we expect to stay at the memorial. I assume about 3 hours is normal? Would we still have enough time to walk around Munich itself in the daylight hours?

I was thinking that we could spend the rest of the day there, then travel on a late train down to GAP and check into a hotel there. Since we really want to see the beauty and nature aspects of that region, it seems to make sense to stay in GP or Mittenwald as a base, rather than daytripping back and forth from Munich. Am I correct in this? We will regret only spending a short time in Munich itself?

We would then have 2 1/2 days there before leaving on 29 May. I did find a 4:30 pm train leaving Mittenwald, via Innsbruck, that would get us to the Zurich airport by 9:45 pm the evening before we leave for NYC (30 May). We would stay at an airport hotel for our early morning flight.

Good plan?
