I am not familiar with Paris at all. I found this listing that is available to us during our visit. http://www.vrbo.com/322534 Does anyone know if this is a good area in which to stay? Also, does anyone have any experience with this landlord?
She is asking for 800 euros deposit up front (1/2 of the cost). How do I learn if this person is reputable? What can I do to protect us from a loss?
Thank you very much.
Is this a good location for a Paris Apartment Rental?

Neither the link to the map nor a specific address is provided. By and large, the 16th is a good area to stay in depending, of course, on the specific location. Without that, it is hard to say. If I were you, I'd want to know where in the 16th the apartment is. The 16th is not as centrally located as I would want to stay.
Try to get a more specific address.
Thank you.
I think if you use a credit card (the listing shows they accept them) you will be protected. Reading the reviews would make me think the place is for real as there is a bit of a negative one regarding cleaning.....do not think a scam would put a review like this one in a VRBO listing.
Best would be if a Fodorite can tell you they have stayed there...good luck.
It tells you well enough where it is, it is near the Passy metro and the shopping on ave Mozart and Passy. That is one of my favorite areas of Paris, I think it is a great location. Besides, one of the comments says it is 1 min to the Passy metro stop.
That really doesn't look like the kind of apt. a scammer would advertise, and the argument between the tenant and landlord on one post is also something I would not expect a scammer to do. I kind of liked that and sided with the landlord as I expect people to be clean and it is very clear that is a luxury apartment. It all sounds legitimate to me, but I'm just going by my gut feeling, of course. There isn't really any real way you can know for sure unless you know someone who stayed in the same place. But that listing has been on there 2 years, I believe. I wouldn't personally worry about that.
That deposit sounds pretty normal and not too bad. I know some places that charge the same as the rent, but 1/2 the rent is what I'm paying for a deposit in a few months on the one I booked. In fact, there was some agency I was considering (and I know they are a good agency with a good reputation) that charges 3000 euro deposit on any apt they rent, ones a lot more modest than the one you choose. Somehow that did kind of bother me, the idea of paying 3000 euro deposit when I was only going to be paying around 800 euro rent for the week.
The 16th is a lovely area but, if this is your first time in Paris, you might want to be more centrally located, such as the 5th or 6th, where you can walk to many places you'll want to visit.
Thats a lot of money for a cold looking place ( not many windows) but to each his own,, the childs "bedroom" is no bigger then a closet, and will cost 40 euros for each child extra per night, yikes. I would keep looking myself. I don't think its a scam, I think its a bit overpriced and barren looking.. and the area while perfectly safe is not my favorite area for first timers..( safety is not the issue I repeat)

Liljill8, I agree with Nancy1652 on this one. I just stayed in the 6th near the Seine and found it very convenient. I went to the 16th to the Marottan-Monet Museum – lovely area but a bit too residential for a first timer I think.
In any case, enjoy Paris. It is more spread out than I had anticipated and involves public transportation to get around.
but a bit too residential for a first timer
"Pretty dead and boring area" is what some of us say when we are not feeling diplomatic.
The location you're looking at looks good...but as others have said on here, you might want to be a located more centrally. A couple of years ago my mom, sister and I rented this apartment:

We were VERY happy with this apartment and its location! I don't know how many people will be going over to Paris with you (I'm assuming up to 6 and there will be kids), but have a look at this apartment.
Thank you very much all. This is very good information. I'm now debating between two other places.
I was set on this one http://www.vrbo.com/237792 but then I just received notice that this onehttp://www.apartofparis.com/detail-apartment.php?857-Le-Marais---Beaubourg-apartment-rentals# is available. Please - anyone have opinions as to which is better? Thank you.
I would go with the apartment vrbo #237792. It is much closer to the Louve and other "must see" sites and it has an elevator which is very important. The other apartment listed it has on the 4th with stairs. You will really appreciate having not to lug all your suitcases up what could be some very narrow stairs and after a full day of site seeing you will be glad there is an elevator and not more stairs to climb that day.
The #237792 also looks like it has more room for your family. Enjoy your visit!
I agree with floridapugmom - #237792 is lovely - so bright and airy - loved all the windows - very spacious, veru child friendly, great location.
The other one looks much darker and I personally do not like the area as well.
@Liljill8 - The VRBO #23772 looks much better than your first choice. The other location looks good too, but as floridapugmom pointed out, you'll have 4 flights of stairs to lug your suitcase up (granted only 1 time) and then when you come back from sightseeing. It does look like it's in a prime location tho. With #23772, that's closer to where I had stayed, so imho that's what I would pick.
I like the VRBO one too. But it annoys me they don't show its location on the map, just all the sights of Paris. Landlords have been known to exaggerate their location.
That annoys me, also, and I often wonder why the owner is trying to hide the location to much. Sometimes I think they have some fear that I don't understand (if you knew the exact address) and sometimes I think they are just clueless about what people might want to know, and others I think they are hiding something.
The first one in the 16th at least gave the closest metro stop and streets, but then one customer review was more specific, so that really narrowed it down.
The VRBO one doesn't really give the street that I can see but does say it is in a pedestrian area in the 2nd, which narrows it down. I think that would have to be actually rue Montorgueil, but there is one other pedestrian area down on rue Tiquetonne, I believe, at least there is a pssage near there. Either area would be okay with me. But I would want more specifics as to exact location.
I don't know why landlords do that if they have the map capability, I've seen lots on VRBO who do have a pinpoint for the apartment. It is irritating.
It is a little more challenging I agree. This forum helped me a lot. I now the address of both the Paris and London rentals that we've reserved. Both look very good with the Paris vrbo apartment in an ideal location.
VRBO does have an insurance policy you can buy in case the place turns out not to be as represented. However, I believe you have to see it, then refuse to stay there-and then I guess have to find an alternate place to stay? (or have it turn out not even to be a legitimate address) in order to get your money back.
Just the thought of having to deal with all that made me go ahead and stay at a VRBO place that was much less wonderful than it was portrayed in the ad.
As long as the VRBO place actually exists. No way to know.
That insurance policy on VRBO doesn't cover you just not liking a place or thinking the description was overblown in terms of misrepresentation or much less wonderful than stated. It has to basically be inhabitable or some very major material defect, or not exist. If it said it had a bathroom but didn't, that should qualify.
