Is there immigration/customs check between Edinburgh and London?
My son will be flying between Edinburgh and London. He is flying into Stansted and was wondering if there is any sort of immigration or customs check or is that considered a domestic flight.
From Stansted he has to return to his college dorm in London to collect his luggage and then make his way to LHR for a return flight back to the states in mid afternoon. He will be taking public transportation back to his dorm but may have to hire a car for trip to LHR with 2 large suitcases depending on time and no immigrations or customs from Edinburgh would be very helpful.

It's not considered a domestic flight, it is a domestic flight. Scotland and England are still part of the UK and we will be traipsing into schools and church halls in a few weeks time just to show that

Of course there is no customs/immigration . . . BUT a more serious question. Is he actually flying from Edinburgh to Stansted, then on to his college than out to LHR for a mid-afteroon flight the same day???
That would be VERY difficult if not impossible since he probably has to be at LHR 2.5 to 3 hours in advance. It will be a minimum 1 hour from his college to LHR so we are talking 4-ish hours just for the trip to LHR plus security/check in at LHR. then there is the travel in from Stansted, then on to the college then collecting the bags.
He really REALLY should fly down the evening before.

He could take the Calednonian Overnight Sleeper train and arrive in London proper (Euston station) early in the morning.

With luggage if he can get over to Paddington Station he can take the Heathrow Express - a dedicated airport train with lots of room for luggage and goes non-stop to Heathrow and stops at all the terminals - cheaper than a car transfer and at his age should be fine. Cab to Paddington, Heathrow Express to Heathrow - BTW takes only 20 minutes or less - car transfers can always be mired in Londons obnoxious traffic due to 19th-century roads being used by 21st-century traffic.

Don't know when the trip is (lots of details omitted from the OP) but if it is in the next month or so it is probably too late to get a reasonable fare on the Caledonian.
But yes -- he either needs to fly down the day before or take the sleeper train -- no question.
I just looked at the EDI website and the earliest flight to Stansted departs at 07:10 and the next one isn't til 10:15. So assuming he is on the 07:10: Arrives STN 08:30 The train to Liverpool Street takes 45 mins (leaves every 15 mins) so say arriving Liverpool Street around 10:00AM. Wherever the school is -- say it takes 25 mins total travel time to get to the school and retrieve bags. 60+ mins to LHR (yes -- even if he takes the HEX because he first needs to get TO Paddington) . . . so very best case scenario he'll arrive at LHR between 11:30 and noon. Which is fine IF the flight is 2:30-3PM-ish, and IF everything works like clock work. No delay on the flight, no disruption on the train or tube.
Very risky for an international flight -- miss it and he'll be up a creek w/o you know what.
