Is there a Rome equivalent to the Carte Orange? Transit passes in Rome.

I find the Carte Orange in Paris or the TravelCard in London to be extremely convenient. Is there any equivalent of a multi-day (or single-day) transit pass in Rome that you can use on various forms of transport?

I know it's possible to walk, and I will be doing so for 12 hours or more per day, but from experience I know I will like a transit pass.

Hi WillTravel,
yes there is a weekly pass called CIS. It costs 16 euros and it is valid for 7 days from the date that you must write on this weekly ticket. It is valid for an unlimited number of trips on the public means of transportation in Rome with the exception of a few ones.

You may not need one, unless you are worried about running out of change. Unlike Paris or London's massive systems, Rome only has 2 subway lines. And most of the Old City is completely missed (probably because they fear destroying too much of ancient Rome while digging the tunnels). You will spend a lot of time hoofing it whether you buy a week-long pass or not.

In addition to the metro, I would use the pass for buses and trams, and given I will be there for five days, I'm sure I can make reasonable use of the pass BATUFFOLINA mentioned. I'm glad there is that opiton.

WillTravel, this is important: if you purchase the settimanale (weekly pass), you must write in the date you first used it, and your name. Then you validate it only once, and the date must match what you've written in. I was stopped going into the Metro, because I did not validate it, and when the Metro cop saw that it was a settimanale, he let me through, but the rules state you must have ID with you that proves you are the person whose name is on the ticket.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

There is also the so called BTI, which costs 11 euros and which is a 3-day-pass (from the day you write on the pass). I must disagree with Bobludlow, you can reach lots of important places with the public means of transportation:
Colusseum (with metro B, stop at Colosseo. Or by bus (number 175 or 75 from Termini bus station).
St. Peters with metro A (Ottaviano, S. Pietro station) or bus # 64 which stops in Via della Conciliazione.
Castel S. Angelo by bus # 64 which stops in Via della Conciliazione.
Spanish Steps (metro A Spagna)
Piazza del Popolo/ Pincio (metro A Flaminio)
Forum and Vittoriano: by bus 64 which stops at piazza venezia.
Piazza della Repubblica/ Terme di Diocleziano (metro A Repubblica).
Trevi Fountain by bus 175 (or the 492) getting off on Via del Tritone.
the list would be longer, and I think that in 5 days these will be the basic things that WillTrav will be able to see.

You can buy the passes at Termini Station (newsagents) or in Piazza dei Cinquecento where there is the large bus stop. There is a little booth where they should sell them or if not, the ATAC personnel can tell you where to get the passes. I think there are also automatic ticket machines where you can get them.

You can actually buy the CIS from any newsstand and most Tabacchis. It might not be the proper purple and orange one with the jumping hare on it - looks more like a till slip, but it has the name and dates on and we did not have any trouble using it!

DONT BUY TICKETS AT TABBACHI SHOPS
WE BOUGHT SEVERAL EXPIRED TICKETS
BUY THEM IN SUBWAY STATION MACHINES

BUSES ARE GREAT. JUST ASK DRIVER OR PEOPLE FOR BUS #

I WOULD JUST BUY A DOZEN SINGLE TICKETS,BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED A TAXI ONCE OR TWICE (VERY REASONABLE)
