We will be there in October and want to take the cable car ride over to Italy. Would like to take the bus back instead of taking the cable back.

I was in Chamonix by the end of July 2001 and the tunnel was closed.

It is due to reopen in November. The local folks are voting next weekend on whether trucks should be allowed again or not, but the French government has stated this referendum is illegal. French government is under pressure from the transporter lobby and the EU, so trucks will be polluting the valley again (sigh ...). <BR>Opponents point that despite repairs and modifications, the tunnel is too narrow, has not enough emergency escapes, etc., which is sadly true.

The plans were to (hopefully) reopen the tunnel at the end of September, but there has been no official confirmation of this lately. After two recent tunnel fires in Austria in the past couple of weeks, it is probably doubtful that it will open then. <BR> <BR>PB

Hi Deb! I read that it's supposed to open Oct '01, but I have also read that there's the posibility that it will never open again. <BR> <BR>Anyone else out there has a website that has reliable updates on it?
