We (two people) are each booked into a double room in the Singel Hotel the last week in December for 8 nights. We chose this location to be close to my grandson who lives in an apartment nearby, in the Jordaan. Is this hotel clean and pleasant and would you recommend it? Most reviews are complimentary, but a few who had single rooms had bad experiences.

I stayed there in April of '06 and was satisfied - nothing to write home about (except the neighborhood), but fine.
I'd book it again.
Single rooms are usually the worst of the lot in most hotels. By 'reviews', I assume you read at Tripadvisor.com....
They're talking about the Singel (as in name of the canal) hotel) - not single rooms.
"Most reviews are complimentary, but a few who had single rooms had bad experiences."
I was referring to this statement...
We did stay at the Singel for about a week after Christmas. Indeed this hotel is nothing to write home about. My wife would have echoed Bette Davis and said, "What a Dump." But it's only a 3 star hotel. It was clean and convenient, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our rooms were small, and the bathrooms had the typical arrangement of the shower, toilet, and wash basin in the same room with only a curtain separating the shower. My daughter's room didn't even have the curtain. It was available over the busy New Years time and was in a good location for us near the ege of the Jordaan area.
