I am trying to plan a trip to Italy next year with 4 adults and 2 children most likely the end of June, first week July. Some of us want to get to Positano and visit Pompeii, Capri, etc, while some of us, who have not yet been to Italy, would like to see Venice. I was thinking of staying somewhere in Umbria and taking a day trip to Pompeii and just staying in Venice on our last leg of the trip. Would it be too much for the day with kids to go from Umbria to Pompei in a day? My other thought was to stay a few nights in Positano, a few in Umbria, then Venice for a couple of days so all get to see what we want. We will have two kids (ages 7 and 9) with us so we don't want to spend too much time traveling and would like to enjoy! We plan on staying in an apartment/agritourismo if we stay in each region. What to do? Please help!

You cannot feasibly visit Pompeii in a daytrip from Umbria.

If you want to include Pompeii, why not fly into Naples, visit the site and see a bit of Naples, and then move north, eventually flying home from Venice?

If you do not want to stay in the city of Naples, you can find agriturismi on the Sorrento peninsula, in or near Vico Equense, and in Furore. Some places might offer tours to Pompeii, or might drive you to the train station where you can hop on a commuter train to the site.

How long is the trip in total number of days on the ground in Italy?

Personally I would avoid Venice in July.

To answer your question:Not likely. It's a four hour road trip from Perugia to Pompeii. If you don't stop for lunch.
No time left to enjoy the ruins which can take a day to appreciate fully.
Why not take the train to Sorrento and stay a few days and use the Circumvesvia to visit Pompeii.
Positiano, incidenatlly,is farther away from Pompeii and much more expensive than Sorrento.

Are you driving? We took the train from Sorrento (where we were staying) to Pompeii. Is there an early ferry from Positano to Sorrento? Or can your hotel recommend a driver? There is a city bus and it stops near Sorrento train station. Go as early as possible to avoid the heat and the traffic on the coast.

There were three delightful older (60s/70s) women who stayed in the flat above ours just outside of Spoleto last September. They did a daytrip to Pompeii by car. One of them did all the driving. They left very early in the AM, and came back around 10PM that night. They had a fabulous time. Mind you they originally drove to Umbria from England, so they are quite used to long hauls. They stayed above us for a week (we were there for two). But they make these incredible journeys every fall.

It is possible. Don't know that I'd want to do it, but it is possible.

hahahaha...thanks immimi for that reminder! It might not just be the kids who say them! Okay, so if we dont' want to rush through Pompeii than we should do it as a daytrip from Almalfi coast. Why avoid Venice in July? I'm guessing crowds? We were hoping to stay approx 2 weeks.

...okay, I'll bite having had the misfortune to visit Venice
in July (and Rome and Florence for that matter).

The non-variables - heat, humidity, crowds and consequential
line-ups.

That was the only time we could fit a trip in so we grabbed it
and put up with the discomfort. And under those circumstances
I'd do it again - just make sure you get up very very early
to explore; book as many sites beforehand and spend at least
a day on the Lido beach for the young-uns. And late in the
evening is also great for wandering - cooler and less crowded
and so very beautiful.

Lots of gelato. Round-trips on the vaparettos - esp. to the
islands. Train trips to Padua, Verona - the Dolomites for
coolness.

I'll be there in 3 weeks so if I have any brainwaves I'll post
them. Or any heatweaves for that matter.

Take my advice: Venice - Umbria - Pompeii - Positano
This is because, considering the period, you can enjoy the beautiful sea of ​​Campania at the end of vacation!
