Is Paris Safe ?

Hi,

i am taking a trip with my friend to paris in the next month or so, i was wondering if there are any safety tips i should consider before going.

I will be staying on Avenue George V area for 3 nights. I will be going to BLVD Haussman, the Champ Elysees, Place de la Concorde, Place Vendome and also the usual tourist attractions eg Eiffel Tower, Louve etc....

In this area, I would say that your only danger is being given a bad table at Maxim's, being overcharged for Chateau Mouton Rothschild, or Charvet not having your favorite patterns in stock.

Why, I believe I detect a whiff of troll!

Hi Andy
I have made 5 trips to Paris over the last 6 years staying Montparnasse, Montmartre and the Maris. I have never encountered a problem or felt any uneasiness while traveling around the city, day or night, using the Metro. However, Paris is a big city and I always keep that in mind as there are areas you do want to be careful around.. i.e if you head out to St Denis, resting place of a lot of the kings of France. Also, I am generally off the streets by 11 pm. But that is just me as I am now north of 60 and not as energetic as I once was.

I would say that in the major tourist neighborhoods that you are planning to see, the chief safety tips are to watch out for pickpockets and for the scams that target tourists. These include people coming up to you and asking whether you lost a gold ring that they just found on the street, people trying to get you to sign petitions and people asking "Do you speak English?" in order to get you to read something they are trying to show you.

Signs on public transportation warn that most crimes against passengers are people trying to steal cell phones. I keep mine out of sight, but you will see many people using theirs all over the place.

I am also north of 60 and less energetic than I used to be, but I just returned from a trip to Paris where I was out until after 11:00 several nights. The metro is full of people at that hour (it shuts down around midnight) and feels no more dangerous than it does during the day. Streets in residential neighborhoods may be fairly isolated at night though, and if you are worried about it, you can take taxis at night, which I did on several occasions.

I heard many incidents from my friend on the pickpocket in Paris, and especially at a crowded area. I had been to Paris twice and thanks God, all were fine. Just be extra careful on the belongings, and never put valuable item at the backpack. One of my group members lost her money inside the backpack during observing the astronomical clock at Old Town Square in Prague

All major cities have pickpockets.

Paris is safer than most US cities as people don't carry guns.
