IS IT WARM IN GREECE IN SEPTEMBER?

Hi all,
Thanks ahead of time for you help - I'm possibly planning a trip to Greece from 16 September to the 25th. I heard mixed reviews about the weather at this time, and want to know from people who have actually been there in this period if it's really beach weather. I was there in May last year, and it was warm enough to lay out, but the breeze was killer, and the water freezing. I can't make it there over the dead of summer cause of work obligations, and need to know if I should plan on going somewhere else. The weather websites give too much of a range in temperature, so if you've been there in the middle/end of September your help is great appreciated! We'll be in Santorini, and possibly Naxos and Paros.
THANKS!

It was actually HOT when I was in Greece in October 1998, but I guess weather, especially in the fall, is unpredictable. The water in Crete was definitely warm enough for swimming. It was what I consider ideal water temperature (and I do not like cold water). I didn't swim in Santorini, but it was definitely hot there and many people were going to the beach.

I have never been to Greece so can't make a comment on how hot it would be, but as a general rule I would have thought that the water temperature would be considerably better in September than the time when you went in May. When you were there in May the water temperature would not have yet had time to warm up, but in September it has had the whole of summer to heat up and would not have cooled down considerably bt then. If I am completely wrong I am sure those who are much more familiar with Greece will correct me.

Hello!

We were in Greece last Sept.21-30, and it was HOT! Especially in Athens, in the unspeakably crowded areas. Mid to high 80s, at least--it felt like mid-90s or more.

A little bit north, in the mountains and away from all the crowding and cars, it was a bit cooler. We didn't go to any islands, so I can't give info there.

If you like to lie out on the beach, then I can already say you have better heat tolerance than I do, but to me it was almost unbearably hot during the day. But as I say, I can't take heat.

Have a great trip!

We were in Athens in late October 2003, and it was warm (80s) and muggy...It was the humidity that killed me. Once we got out into the islands, it was very pleasant there, both in and out of the water.

Happy travels,

Julie

September is a great month weather-wise as well as in general. the sun's not so intense, prices are starting to drop and it's not so crowded.

September is still a very popular time to go for a beach holiday and is preferable to August, which is unbearably hot. Santorini is also way south compared to other Greek islands, and will get hotter weather for longer.

Of course, you'll always get exceptions as autumn closes in, with the chance of the odd cloudy or rainy day, but this would be unlucky.

Evenings may be less stifling than high summer - which can be a godsend - so take something with sleaves to wear in the evenings.

And the water will certainly be warmer than in May.

We have been there twice in September..in our opinion it is one of the best times to go. As above, we were sweltering during on visit to Athens at the end of Sept. It is a great time to go-fewer tourists.
