I've heard that purchasing tickets on discount airline websites are at their absolute cheapest on Wednesday morning (just after midnight in the time zone of the airlines HQ). Is there any truth to that? Thanks.

Hard to know since ticket prices for many airline flights are computer-controlled and prices will fluctuate depending on how well or poorly a particular flight is selling out, the 'break-even" point, etc., etc.
I have, more than once, bought a cheaper ticket much closer to the departure date vs. way out.
For discount airlines (not discount or so-called discount ticket marketing..and be aware that some of those marketers such as Orbitz are owned by the airlines) the general "rule" is as soon as a ticket goes on sale it will be at its cheapest price.
Airlines such as EasyJet will TELL you this and that the price will only rise as the departure date approaches.

Not about getting cheaper tickets but an airline tip all the same:
When requesting specific seats on Singapore Airlines like for instance the four/two seats in the first row of economy - they put the request in BUT the first person to re-request/confirm they want THOSE SEATS gets them: They way to do this (if in Singapore) phone the airline office at 12.05am (just after midnight and up until 2am) to confirm.
Here in South Africa I did it the minute the airline office opened on the day of departure.
May help with other airlines - that I don't know.

My understanding is that the time is relative to the headquarters city (hub) of the particular airline. So Contintental's 12:01 would be Houston, and Delta's would be Atlanta, diff zones.
The airlines supposedly 'release' unsold seats at a new (lower) fare to induce some sales each week at that time.
