Is it safe to leave your luggage in your car in Fussen?
We have rental car and we are planning to go to Fussen to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. We have our luggage with us, but we are afraid to leave them in the car while we are touring in the castles ... as we had a bad experience in Rome where everything was stolen from our rental car there, and we are afraid to have the same again.
So we are wondering if it is safe to leave our luggage in the car while touring in Fussen?

If it is all in the trunk, I would not hesitate to do it. Flukes do happen though.
I once accidentally left the car full of our luggage, GPS, etc. unlocked in Prague and when we returned two hours later, everything was still there. I realize how very, very, very lucky I was.

It is not safe to leave luggage INSIDE the car anywhere in the world. leaving even a map or a jacket in the car can easily attract attention.
Any luggage, along with all other belongings, should be kept locked in the trunk. And should be put in the trunk when you leave in the am - not put there when you arrive at the parking lot.
For extra safety park you car where there is an attendant, a lot of foot traffic, and if at all possible back the trunk up against a wall or a tree, instead of leaving it open to the driving lane.
That said Italy is notorious for thefts from autos like this and it seems to be less common in Germany - but you should be this careful everywaere, including your local mall.

I think a theft is a cost of renting a car. It is something one has to weigh the benefit vs. liability when choosing how to connect destinations.
If you are looking for a simplistic binary answer: yes or no, you will not get one. You only can manage the probability of theft. Probability means just that. Low means unlikely, but still happens.
Leaving a car in non secure place, things visible in the visible part of the car, etc increases the odd.
When I park my car, I assume there is an odd of never seeing my possession left hidden in trunk again. I weigh the odd between having them taken from the car vs. taking valuables in my day bag and have them stolen or lost. When I have to leave a car in a parking lot with known high theft rate, I would design the itinerary to be able to drop luggage in a secure storage beforehand.

There used to be luggage lockers at the Fuessen train station. There was some (maybe still is?) construction going on there so I don't know if they are still available. Send an email in English to Bahn asking if they are still available:

There is always a risk if leaving luggage in one's car, but there are some things you can do to reduce those risks. These steps include
- Don’t ever leave anything in the car that can be seen through its windows
- ALWAYS keep key documents including your passport, cash, and bank cards with you (preferably in a under-the-clothes passport pouch, with only what you need for the day outside of that pouch), and be sure that that pouch also has a copy of any key documents you might need on one or more days
- Don’t ever move things from the interior to the trunk in the place that you will leave the car – do that somewhere else, even if it means pulling off the road briefly a mile or so from your destination
- Try to park in a well lighted area where other people might have eyes-on (not so much because they might act, but because their presence might discourage thieves)
- If possible, park your car in a way that would make it difficult for thieves to gain anything – for example, consider backing the car up to a wall to make it difficult to open the trunk or remove anything from it
- Be sure you know how to contact your rental car agency and insurance agency as soon as possible after any incursion
- Only leave your car with things in it if you are willing to come back and find that they are gone

We overnighted in Fussen and used the lockers at the train station, as we wanted to hike for the day before checking in to our hotel. The lockers were large enough for at least 2 day packs, or small case though, not a full sized suitcase.
