We are planning a vacation in Southern Greece in October 2010. Several people told me that it might not be safe there now, considering everthing that's going on. Any opinions?
Is it safe to go to Greece in October considering....

Tell them they're mistaken. It's safe.
What do you mean by "safe"?
Bring lots of euro
Well, since they are mad at their government, and the seat of governmnet is Athens, I would think that only if you went wandering around the capital, going to see what all that noise is over there....
More of concern might be strikes and walkouts.
<<<< Several people told me that it might not be safe there now>>>>
Who are these 'people'? What is likely to be unsafe?
I live in southern Greece, nothing's any different here, perfectly safe.
Have the people who told you it was unsafe actually been there recently?
Many people told me that Egypt wasn't safe, nor was London safe on my own, but none of them had ever been to either place. Both were perfectly safe and I had a fantastic time.
It MIGHT not be, actually, but so what? It is probably a lot SAFER than that neighborhood your "friends" live in.
For some people nothing is safe. Do you want to be them?
Id agree that the biggest danger is the threat of more strikes. But as the whole of Europe seems to be in a bulshy mood at the moment just cover your self with adequate insurance or stay at home for the next five years or so.
Id take the chance.
I just returned, all is good. Don't listen to them. The Greeks were so happy to see us and were frustrated that the media and "they" are saying Greece isn't safe. That's complete hogwash!!
I've been in Greece for nearly three weeks now, and have had no problems or issues of safety at all. Greek friends here are furious with how exaggerated the news has been (for the most part) in the foreign press.
Transportation strikes/walkouts are unfortunately becoming a big problemnot just in Greece, but many other European countries, too. If you are concerned, follow the excellent advice posted here by travelerjan who suggests booking all your travel arrangements on Fridays, Saturdays,Sundays, when strikes in Greece are much less likely.
I am in Greece right now, and the temperature is in the high 90s, so it is unsafe to spend too much time in the sun. You won't have that problem in October.

Chances are, your friends are just envious.
Heimdall, you beat me to it!
I am in the hottest part of Greece right now & was about to say that the biggest danger is from the sun, or not being able to sleep, lowest temp here overnight last night was nearly 80F!!!
Heimdall and yiassas are absolutely right! The biggest threat right now is the sun. In Naxos today it was 90+ degrees.
Go and enjoy Greece. You will have a wonderful time!
Well, I am Greek and, concidering what's going on, I still don't feel like jumping every tourist visiting Greece...
Just kidding. It's perfectly safe! Come here and enjoy yourself!
October will be ideal for walking around in Athens. Southern Greece will aslo be perfect! Just a note: you may get some rain in some parts of southern Greece, especially in Dodekannese (Rhodes, Kos and so on) if you're planning on going there at the end of October.
Have a great time in Greece!
Doesn't matter when and where you are going, there will be some people who'd tell you it's not safe, or too expensive, or you'll get a virus, or anything to prevent you from going.
Ask them to show you their crystal ball.
Living in Greece for 10 years thee have always been strikes weekly and it should not be considered dangerous to miss out on ferry schedules or other transportation. If Greece still want to save their reputation that is left, strikes must be dissolved and stopped...
That's up to the greek's i think, none can see in the future, right?
LOL Thank you, everyone! We actually decided to go to Catalonia - our second choice destination - because we found a cheap direct flight. Flights to Greece were so expensive, but Greece is still on the "to go" list. Next year!
