Is it easy to find ATMs in small towns along the Rhine?

We'll be staying in St. Goar. I've read how small it is, but if it caters to tourists, it seems like there should be plenty of ATMs. True, or will I need to travel into a larger city (like Koblenz?) to find an ATM?

Also, I'd assume since it's Germany that Deutchebank (sp) ATMs are common. True? (

Yes, there is least one ATM in St. Goar. Can't remember if it was Deutchebank or not, but I would not count on finding a branch/ATM of one specific bank.

No need to travel elsewhere.
I don't not know if there are *many* ATMs in St. Goar, but Visa's ATM finder shows at least three banks w/ ATMs there.

Even small towns usually have a branch of a Sparkasse or Volksbank w/ ATM.

You also find ATMs in most/many gas stations nowadays.

Just remember that the German word for ATM is "Geldautomat".

It hardly matters whether it caters to tourists or not - how do you think do people LIVING there come to get thir cash?

>True, or will I need to travel into a larger city (like Koblenz?) to find an ATM?

Please tell me you are joking. A town needs to consist of one house to not contain at least one ATM.

No. What you will see is mainly Volksbank, Sparkasse or Postbank. Although in St. Goar, Deutsche Bank or Dresdner Bank are probably present too.

Altamire, I certainly can't/won't presume that everyone else in the world gets their cash in the same way I do. For all I know, there are still communities where there is a bank that everyone enters to get their cash.

By the way, my parents, who are in their 70s, still drive quite a distance to their bank to deposit and cash checks. They are uncomfortable with ATMs.

Probably there are - I havenīt encoutered them anywhere in Germany, however remote and backwoods a locality is. A Sparkasse or Volksbank is everywhere.

AFAIK the ATMs have been around for at least 40 years now - more than enough time for a 99% off the population to get used to them. There are people who are uncomfortable with having a mobile phone, too, but the percentage is just as low.

There is only one place where there are no ATMīs around. It is the place where you are at the moment when you REALLY NEED one.

Hi missypie,

No need to worry, there will be ATM's in St. Goar. We stopped there last Oct. We've never seen a town or village without one.

Several years ago, I had similar trepidations re travel to the Czech and Slovak Republics.
Then I looked at the Visa ATM map.
When I saw that even the population-500 villages in the most remote boondocks had 3 or 4 ATMs, my anxieties were relieved totally. I dare say that there isn't a block (that's zoned commercial) in all of Europe without an ATM.

Watch out, though. If an ATM is privately owned (like the ones in convenience stores stateside), you might get charged an arm and a leg to withdraw your cash. Always look for a bank-affiliated machine first.
