Is it a good idea to spend Christmas and New year in the Amalfi coast?

After reading my guide book on Italy I am dreaming of the amalfi coast scenery. Unfortunately I can only go late december. Is that still a good time? I am planning to be there for a week. I would like to stay in ravello and drive to naples, sorrento, positano, amalfi, and pompei. Good idea?

Hello,

I'm going to Be in the Amafli area for the holidays too. I've heard its different, but still a nice time to visit. It will be quieter. We're staying at the Hotel Poseiden in Positano. Positano was recommended highly to me.

Winter is not the ideal time to visit the Amalfi Coast but if that is the only time you are able to go, it's better than not going at all. Many hotels, shops and restaurants are closed and there can be an eerie "ghost town" ambience, but on the bright side, it won't be crowded. Part of what makes the Amalfi Coast so special is the incomparable scenery which is at its best in the summer. Too me, the position of the winter sun and the light it throws on the scenery does not show off the Amalfi Coast to its best advantage. The weather is another concern. You may be very lucky and have some spectacularly sunny and mild days, or you may be there when it is cloudy and foggy (especially up in Ravello)with rain and/or drizzle. The winter seas can be rough and boats to Capri and other towns along the coast will be running at a reduced schedule, or, if the seas are particularly bad, not at all.
