is 3 days to short a time to stay in an apartment in rome?

hello all,

i've been reading a lot on the forum, and i think that i've decided it makes the most sense money-wise to stay in an apartment for the 3 days that we are in rome this fall.

some logistics: there will be 4 adults (2 couples), we will be in rome the last 3 nights of our 18 day italian vacation and i'm looking at places near the campo de fiori.

my concern is that since we will only have 2 full days, that there won't be enough time to really appreciate staying in apartment (getting groceries, learning the neighborhood, etc), but i still really like the idea. do the hassles of a short stay outweigh the benefits?

An apartment is totally worth it, even for three days. The "hassles" are minimal, for me anyway as I love food and drink shopping, and you will appreciate having a fridge even if you don't cook. The Campo area has many small foodshops and two bakeries and there's a small supermarket hidden away on via Monte della Farina.

Just because you are staying in an apartment, you don't have to cook all your meals. I find it handy to get breakfast stuff, but don't always do that. Recently stayed in Liverpool in an apartment for just 2 nights. Breakfast in the apartment, other meals out. Was lovely having the space and the fridge...all very relaxing!

hi,
we stayed at https://www.romesweethome.it/apartme...nt.asp?lang=it

i am not sure if that exact apt. will work for you. There are 2 queen beds in seperate rooms. It isnt really large but the location is only steps from Campo de Fiore. I would stay there again.

The primary advantage, above all else, in doing an apartment is the sheer amount of room over a hotel. Granted, you are sharing a space with others, but what the heck, you'll have been sharing for 2 weeks prior to that. Plus, in most cases you can get a far nicer apartment for less money than 2 rooms in a hotel.

Negative, you have to make your own bed. No room service. No front desk. No in-hotel restaurant.

I love apartments!

If I had only two days in Rome, which IMO is already a crime, the very last thing I would want to do is go grocery shopping or spend one second of my time there setting up house. Why bother being in Rome? For two days, I wouldn't unpack. Furthermore, the selection of places that permit 2-night rentals is very limited. For agencies and owners, two night rentals block someone from renting for the entire week. They are a money loser. To me, this is a serious waste of time and energy but, to each his own. Everyone travels with different priorities.

thank you all for you inputs! i think that the space alone will make an apt worthwhile.

jetset-i am looking at that apt as we speak...thank you!

nycfoodsnob-we actually have 3 nights in rome - 2 full days, and i know that it is a crime...but we are doing a week in tuscany and a week on the amalfi coast, and of all the places i figured i'd eventually get back to, rome seemed most likely.

I would stay in an apartment for 3 days. I have done that in Paris and prefer an apartment. I don't cook, I just like to have a small kitchen/kitchenette to bring in food and drink. I also like the privacy of an apartment. Other things that I enjoy about apartment stays are the additional space and feeling like a "resident" of the neighborhood where I stay. Definitely doable.

Just a warning re Romesweethome that some of their properties are risky & whilst they may appear helpful they may not deliver - especially on refunds - they may also change your apartment booking without notice. I will never use them again.
Campo De Fiori has a few grocery shops & is lively at night. The market prices can be more expensive than the shops but the haggle is part of the fun.

I really like apartments and usually stay in apartments when traveling in Europe.

However, when I went to Rome - also a 3 night trip - I didn't rent an apartment. It didn't seem worth it to me for such a short time. I'd barely have had time to settle in and then I'd be leaving. But I was traveling solo, perhaps it would be worth it since you're traveling with others. Or you could take a day from Tuscany and/or Amalfi and add it to Rome. Then staying in an apartment would definitely be worth it.

"we actually have 3 nights in rome - 2 full days"

Of course I'm not to old to remember a time when I, too, thought that statement sounded like an eternity. Truth is, 2 full days in Rome passes like the sound of a finger snap. For me, a traveler who loves to linger in the rich history of this heavily layered city, the words "2 full days" conjures a chuckle.

I sure hope the second couple is a set of patient parents or a die-hard loving pair of siblings because I couldn't imagine sharing living quarters with another couple for three nights at the end of an 18 day trip to Italy. Privacy and "down time" is too important to me. There's no way to know how anyone is going to feel 15 days into a trip like this unless you've done this sort of thing over and over for years with the same couple.

There are no guarantees with apartment rentals. If something goes wrong, what will you do? How will this effect the other couple and your relationship with them? Why subject your fellow travelers to the risks? A hotel reservation with a credit card offers more security.

If everyone in your party knows the risks and they're on the same page as you, then go for it and good luck. I gamble only when I know, when I'm sure, I'm going to win.

I'd take 2 days from Amalfi. It's a lovely place, but I think a week is overkill. Add that to your stay in Rome.

Agree with Charnees and use a couple of your Amalfi days in Rome. We always have rented apartments even for three nights in Rome and always find one with terraces. Great places for relaxing and vino before dinner or just picking up and having hearty wonderful appetizers relaxing on your terrace surrounded by the Roman rooftops and ambience. Bramente Penthouse with rentalinrome has two terraces...two BR and two Baths....you do have stairs to contend with....right off Piazza Navona and very central for walking everyplace. Our trip this spring we are staying in Trastevere.
