I will be in Avignon for 1.5 days (Sunday - Monday) and wanted to see if that is enough time to see the city itself, as well as plan a trip to Pont Du Guard & Uzes. I will be traveling by car.

With a car I'd say yes, a quick overview. My preference is to linger but it's not that far from Avignon to Uzes, maybe a half hour drive with the Pont du Gard along the way. I think I'd be inclined to use the larger block of time to visit the Pont and Uzes.

By way of contrast I spent 5 or 6 days in Uzes and several in Avignon. But a different sort of trip and you can get a taste in the time you have.

Of course you can "see" them literally in that time, but obviously you can't spend much time in them seeing anything that takes any time at all (I'm referring to Uzes and Avignon), such as the Petit Palais museum in Avignon (which is excellent), or the Musee Georges Borias or the chateau in Uzes. The Pont du Gard is the obvious, the structure (although there is some "musem" with information on it, I didn't spend a lot of time there.

So when you say you want to "see the city," which did you have in mind, that's all.

We made a day trip to Uzes, the pont from Avignon and it was pleasant enough. As for Avignon, you'll have to pick and choose.

Uzes is a fairly small town. We spent 2-3 hours there, climbed the chateau tower and wandered around and felt that was enough. We also spent 3-4 hours at the Pont du Gard, including a picnic (picked up food while we were in Uzes) and a swim, and walking quite a ways in both directions. That's a fairy full day but you'd have the evening for dinner and wandering around Avignon. On the half day you could visit the Palais and wander around Avignon more.

Could you spend more time? Of course but a full day and a half would not be too rushed.

No, do include Uzes. I loved it there and while smaller I found it at least as interesting as Avignon, actually spent more time there. And if you'll be driving to the Pont du Gard it isn't much further. In my opinion Uzes is lovely, quite unique and would be a satisfying stop even for just a couple of hours.

Nope

Note that all/most shops will be closed in Avignon on Sunday, & also Monday morning. Museums will be open, but I think cities are more interesting when the shops are open. We've stayed near Uzes for 2 weeks, but we never went there on a Sunday. A local claims that shops are open in Uzes on Sunday.

Most shops are open in St Remy on Sunday - but more shops will be closed there on a Monday.

Other things aside like if shops being open are key then Avignon has much more to offer IME in both and has the magnificent palace of the Popes - one of the greatest palaces in all of Europe from size (largest Gothic palace in Europe) and history - and Avignon is a city that comes alive at night - I visited the palace at night once if I recall right - and the half-still-broken Pont d' Avignon still standing evokes in everyone the famous childrens' song "Sur la pont d' Avignon, vous y dancez vous y dances )pardon my poor French) - Uzes is great to but the time you take driving there could be spent in Avignon.

Is Avignon alive on a Sunday night??

Out of 10 non-hotel restaurants listed in the current Michelin Red Guide for central Avignon - all but 2 are closed on Sundays - all day.

There are zillions of restaurants not listed in the Red Michelin guide, actually. I'll bet most or all of the ones on the main square are not.

Avignon hops day and night, seven days of week in season and local restaurants cater to the crowds - have no fear of going hungry in Avignon - even if it is at an outdoor pizza joint!

Christina - my point is that if 8 out of 10 restaurants that I have info about are closed on Sunday - maybe nothing is "alive" on a Sunday night. I've never been to Avignon on a Sunday - so I don't know - that's why I asked "is Avignon alive on a Sunday night".
