Ireland Itinerary Advice

Jump to last reply

We are a group of 3 couples, planning a trip to Ireland in late September, 2015. We're in the 55-60 yr old range, all in good health. We are interested in seeing the history and natural beauty of the island, visiting pubs and enjoying meeting residents and other travelers.
We are all traveling separately in other parts of Europe either before or after our time in Ireland, meeting in Dublin for the beginning of our trip. We've studied guidebooks and maps, but would like to know how realistic our plans are as well as needing advice on where to base ourselves to avoid the one night stays as much as possible. We have 5 days together; then 2 of the couples will spend 2 more days in Ireland. So.....

Days 1 & 2: Dublin-Sleep in Dublin

Day 3: Would like to see Glendalough, Kilkenny, Rock of Cashel. Via Michelin maps suggest we can do all 3, but would it be too rushed to enjoy? Spend the night in Cashel or sleep in Kilkenny and visit Cashel the next morning?

Days 4 & 5: This is where we're undecided. The order in which we do things depends on whether we are visiting Cashel in the am or not. We would like to do the Dingle Peninsula, and at least some of the sights on the Ring of Kerry, if not all of it. We would like to be able to base ourselves in one town for both nights if possible. Also need to consider minimizing drive time to Dublin airport for Couple 1 on Day 6.

Days 6 & 7: Couple 1 leaves for Dublin airport for a flight out of the country that afternoon. Couples 2 & 3 drive to County Clare. Want to see Adare, Dromoland Castle and Cliffs of Moher. Other suggestions? Also doing some genealogical research. What would be a good base to spend 2 nights?

Day 8: Couples 2 & 3 leave from Shannon airport in am.

Our sincere thanks in advance for your advice and wisdom. I
