We are leaving for Italy next month. I have a US based iPhone and will be buying the premium service for a few dollars a month from AT&T that reduces incoming/outgoing rates to .99. Local AT&T store said to pay for 3 months (AT&T landline call said 2 months) because that is how long the Euruopean companies have to charge AT&T back. That way I will be charged the .99 rate instead of the 1.29 rate.
I am also getting conflicting "opinions" between the AT&T store and landline phone conversation with AT&T about how to dial.
To further confuse me, I Googled and got different information.
Help me with how to do the following (assuming AC210 cell number 123-4567)
~ people trying to call me in Italy from US:
From cell phone in US: 2101234567
From landline in US: 011392101234567 (store and landline info conflicts)
~ me trying to call while in Italy:
To US: +1210-1234567 (+ sign appears by pressing and holding the 0 key?)(do you press - or is that a spacer?)
Within Italy: idential to how an Italian would call a number with a landline
How would somebody in Italy try to reach my cell phone? Any difference in somebody in Italy calling me with cell or landline?:
~ me trying to call while in Italy to get voice mail:
I don't have a clue.
Please review what I have entered above and please correct me or fill in the blanks.
By the way, AT&T ~ both store and landline ~ said they do not publish any brochure, phamplet, etc. explaining the process.
Thanks!

Hi P,

If I am calling Italy (01 23 45 67 89) from the US, I dial 011 39 1 23 ...
Note that the zero is dropped.
If I am calling the US (210 123 4567) from Italy I dial 00 1 210 123.... (or + 1 210..... from a cell phone)
However. Calling your cell phone depends on whether it is a US number.
>From landline in US: 011392101234567
011 is international dialing
39 is the area code for Italy
2 10 12 34 56 7 will, I think, connect to a landline number in Milan. (02 is the code for Milan)
My guess is that you have a US number, so your friends would call you on your cell phone as if it were a call to the US and you would be connected wherever you are. (I think).
Thanks "ira". Sometimes I think I have too much time on my hands ~ and I still work.
You know if you have tried this before, that this task can be complex. While trying to get a voice mail password today, I learned some more.
Combining what I have learned from ira, AT&T store, and talking with landline with AT&T, here is where I stand (PLEASE TELL ME MY MISTAKES):
Emergency number: 112 (not 911) ANYONE KNOW IF WOULD HAVE TO PUT 39 OR SOMETHING IN FRONT OF 112?
From USA (cell or land) to International Roaming phone: (AC)(number)
From my cell phone in Italy to US: +1,(AC),(number) (to get +, press and hold 0 key ~ it does work on iPhone)
From my cell phone in Italy to an Italian number: 39,then dial local # just as you would from landline (I QUESTION THIS INFORMATION ~ ANYBODY KNOW FOR SURE?)
Check voice mails from Italy: Hold down 1 key or if that does not work, dial +1,(AC),(number) and press * during voice mail greeting. Will ask for your voice mail password.
Italian landline/cell calling my cell number while in Italy: 00,1,(AC),(number)
and finally,
Italian landline calling number in US: 00,1,(AC),(number)
NOTE: don't actually enter "," above ~ I just put there to separate a long line of numbers.
Appreciate any corrections of above. I am not sure why AT&T does not publish some type of phamplet. I have used AutoEurope phones for the past several years and it always came with good instructions.
fyi: make sure to turn off your data roaming when not in use.
just got back from there and a friend of mine didn't and came back to a huge bill.
even though I kept reminding her as I kept checking my iphone.
I can't contribute here but thanks for starting this thread; I have an Iphone and go to Italy in June and am just starting to worry the bone about it.
Hi P,

>Emergency number: 112 (not 911) ANYONE KNOW IF WOULD HAVE TO PUT 39 OR SOMETHING IN FRONT OF 112?
112 is the international emergency number for Europe. That is all you dial.
>From my cell phone in Italy to an Italian number: 39,...
Only if your cell phone is not an Italian phone. If it is, you don't dial 39.
If it is an American number, you dial +39
To call within Italy, if you have an Italian phone, you dial the city code (Milan is 02, Rome is 06, etc) and the number.
>Italian landline calling number in US: 00,1,(AC),(number)
Yes.
The iPhone has international dial assist built in. You just hit the phone number in your contacts, the iPhone knows you are in Italy and does the necessary to make the outbound call. No country codes to worry about. This works perfectly for me in France.
When people from the US are dialing your cell phone they simply dial it exactly as they would when you are in the US. It doesnt change when you go out of the country.
The iPhone should be set up to assist you when calling back to the states from any number programed into the iPhone. It's part of the standard AT&T iPhone service. It's called "International Assist".
If dialing directly, without International Assist, then you would add +001 to the telephone number you are calling in the States.
You would have to dial long distance (to and from the States) in order to dial a local number in Italy, this includes the 112 emergency number, since your phone is not connected to the local service.
you might check the apple/iphone website. they have a number of support discussions ongoing about using the iphone internationally.
