internet access in Italy

Hi, looking for advice on internet access in Italy. I am going there for a month in May. Staying at budget hotels . Are there many internet cafes in Italy or free wi fi at coffee shops. What would you recommend to keep in touch with the family here in Australia. Is a phone card purchased in Italy another option. Would really appreciate your advice on this thanks.
