International Travel Insurance-For Seniors

We are four seniors (ages 73-82) traveling in Italy by car - independently, this Sept/Oct-2007 - for (19) days. We are in need of travel insurance - for our health issues. Medicare Insurance does not cover us when we travel out of the country. This is our fifth trip to Italy-so we are familar with the territory. Can anyone suggest any web sites-that offers travel insurance for seniors? Some of the sites I checked on offer travel insurance - but with maximum payouts of $10M-
$15! Can anyone help us out?

Thank you ......... rkrummel

Compare insurance on www.insuremytrip.com, but existing illness will only be covered if you purchase within 7-14 days of any initial trip payments.

You must mention all possible problems to the insurance company. If you don't it leaves them with a "get out clause" if something goes wrong so they don't have to pay out.

Can't help you with the insurance question, but I am curious what car rental company you are using. I have been having trouble renting in Europe because of my age. Most of the companies I have queried refuse to rent to those of us who are over 70.

You can try TravelGuard, Insuremytrip, or GlobalTravelShield by Amex. I've used all of them.

As for renting cars my best bet in Germany has always been Gemut - Bob and Andy have good solid rates and they may be Italy too.

Do you have a Medicare supplement? If so you might be covered inder that. Our supplement covers up to $50,000.00 and we also buy travel insurance to cover evacuation. We usually buy TravelGuard.

We've never had to disclose any health problems when buying travel insurance--as long as you purchase within the company's limit (usually no more than 15 days after paying for your trip) you are covered IF you elect that coverage. We've used TravelGuard, CSA, and another company whose name I can't remember; the insuremytrip.com web site is the way to go, as the customer service is excellent if you need an explanation of policy coverage.

I just bought some for the first time since I will be traveling in Oct. w/o my nice benefits here at work (retiring next month), and my TA recommended www.accessamerica.com I had to purchase w/in 14 days of "initial trip deposit" to be eligible for waiver for pre-existing conditions. The policy coversquot;Trip Cost Protection, Medical Protection, Baggage Protection, Rental Car Protection, and Assistance Services".

My husband became ill in Moscow some years ago. We thought we were covered by ins. we'd purchased (Access America). They covered some, but much to our surprise our AARP supplmental ins. covered 80% of the costs. If you have AARP as a M'care supplement check out your coverage. If you have this option, they cover 30 days abroad.
