International driving permit necessary?

We will be renting a car and spending 2 days driving arund Tuscany late next week. I just read in my guidebook that an IDP is required, but the AAA website says it is merely recommended. Any comments/advice?

Thanks!
Caroline

I've always read it was required in Italy. I had mine in Sardinia in October.

No one ever asked to see it. However I was never pulled over by the police.

I guess it's like insurance. You don't need it until you REALLY need it.

It is required in Italy that you have one. It is a translation of the information on your drivers license and necessary if you get pulled over or for some other reason are stopped by the police. I had to show it at the rental desk in April, others here have indicated they did not have to show theirs. I think I paid $20 for the photo and IDP at AAA.

There have been a couple of recent threads lately about this, so if the search engine is working, try a search for IDP and you'll get some more information.

Have fun! Tuscany is beautiful!

tgatl I'm not sure you can pick one up for someone else. The lady at AAA in September watched me sign mine. After she took my photo to mount in the IDP.

Didn't even think about that, Indy--thanks for mentioning it. I will have DH go, then! I'm just glad I realized this before we went to pick up the car...lol
