International driving permit necessary?
We will be renting a car and spending 2 days driving arund Tuscany late next week. I just read in my guidebook that an IDP is required, but the AAA website says it is merely recommended. Any comments/advice?
Thanks!

I've always read it was required in Italy. I had mine in Sardinia in October.
No one ever asked to see it. However I was never pulled over by the police.
I guess it's like insurance. You don't need it until you REALLY need it.

It is required in Italy that you have one. It is a translation of the information on your drivers license and necessary if you get pulled over or for some other reason are stopped by the police. I had to show it at the rental desk in April, others here have indicated they did not have to show theirs. I think I paid $20 for the photo and IDP at AAA.
There have been a couple of recent threads lately about this, so if the search engine is working, try a search for IDP and you'll get some more information.
Have fun! Tuscany is beautiful!
