My wife and I are planning a trip to Interlaken around 4/20/06. We were planning to stay in Interlaken for 3 days, but now we are wondering if we should stay in Interlaken for 2 days and 1 day in Lucerne? We were planning to take a train ride back thru Lucerne and stop for 3-4 hrs on the way back to the Zurich airport to pickup our rental car for a 7 day vacation in Germany. I'm torn between staying in Interlaken for the 3 days, but need some advice....Please give me some advice.

There is a lot to do in the Interlaken area--the mountains, the lakes, the hikes, the Ballenberg open-air museum, Thun, Brienz, the Schilthorn, the Jungfraujoch, etc.--so I would recommend spending three days enjoying the beauty of the Berner Oberland. You can see the heart of Lucerne in three or four hours and still have time for a snack on the banks of the Reuss river.

I agree. There's more to do in the Interlaken area, and I'm not sure that the best scenery on Lake Luzern is accessible by boat trip in April. Lake Brienz is lovely.
Three days isn't a long time. I'd stick to your original idea and stay in Interlaken (or check other threads about Wengen or Grindelwald).
You can go to the mountains, visit Ballenberg or see Bern. Or do a ferry ride on the lake or visit Thun. Plenty for three days.
Stopping on your way back in Lucerne is also a good idea. The ferries in Lucerne operate the whole year although on a limited basis in the winter months.
