Interesting Village Stop on the TGV between Creusot (Burgundy)and Aix

I am traveling by train from northern Burgundy to Aix-en-Provence. I have a day and an night to spend in one town or village between Creusot near Autun in Burgundy, where there is a TGV connection and Aix. Does anyone have a suggestion of a pretty/interesting town in which to spend my time? A good restaurant and/or hotel would be a plus. I have stayed in Lyon, Dijon, Beaune, and Avignon and am looking for a new place to explore without a car.

The TGV does not stop in villages. You should look for some Intercités or TER trains instead.

.....and then you may check
Vienne,
Valence or Montelimar as starting points of the direct bus to Pont d'Arc http://en.cavernedupontdarc.fr/
Grenoble and the scenic route Napoleon train ride to Veynes - Aix-en-Provence

Actually, there is a TGV station in le Creusot Montceau Montchanin.

I would go to Grenoble - like neckervd recommended.

Or Chambery or Annecy. You can get to Annecy in less than 1 hr with no train changes - many departures. Annecy might even be a day trip from Le Creusot.

I don't think that anybody considers Grenoble to be a village.

I don't think that is possible on the TGV. YOu have to change in Lyon on that route, and there are only 1-2 stops on the TGV routes between Creusot and Aix. I think Valence and/or Avignon, depending on train. That's it on the TGV. They don't make a lot of stops.

I don't think CRJ specified that he/she had to take the TGV. Just that Le Creusot is near a TGV station.

I must have made a mistake - Le Creusot to Annecy is not less than 1 hr nor no-train-changes.

Humm.... His subject line did seem to say that the village should be on the TGV line. In that case, I agree that there are no villages.

People don't always think this through. That's why we give them a second, third and even a fourth chance...

Many thanks to you all so far. I am a newbie poster so have much to learn. Bottom line is that I don't have a car and am leaving in the morning (Sept 10) from Tavernay (near Autun). My friends will deposit me at some near-by train station (it doesn't need to be the TGV). From there I have the rest of that day, that night and much of the next day to be somewhere interesting that will allow me to be in Aix (again by train) by 6pm on Sept 11. Hope that helps, though it might not increase my options! CRJ

My recommendations - and I will give them star ratings - just like Michelin does:

- Chambery*** 2 3/4 hrs to get there with 1 train change
3 3/4 hrs to Aix with 1 change

- Grenoble* 2 1/2 hrs to get there with 1 change
3 1/2 hrs to Aix with 1 change

- Valence 1 1/2 hrs to get there with 1 change
3/4 hrs to get to Aix with 0 changes, several other TGVs with 1 chg

We stayed a block from the train station in Chambery. We were across the street from the train station in Grenoble. We have never stayed overnight in Valence, but have visited it twice while staying in a gite for 2 weeks that was 1 hr from Valence. We've visited Chambery twice, and Grenoble once.
