INGO I NEED YOUR HELP

I will be in Germany in 3 weeks.

I would like to know what days of the week shops are closed in the following places.
Dresden, Freital,Plauen, and Meissen. If you can make any suggestions on shops and restaurants for Freital and Plauen I will appreciate it.
What good sites are there in Freital? I am having a real hard time finding info on Plauen and Freital.

Thanks for your time and your help.

No capital letters, please. That's like screaming.

What draws you to Freital? Just curious. I know they have a porcelain manufacture there, but ...? There is also a small castle there (Schloss Burgk) with an exhibit on the local mining/history and a nice but small picture gallery. The narrow-gauge steam train from Freital to Dippoldiswalde will re-open on 13 Dec which is too late for you, sorry.

Shops are closed on Sundays except for some gift shops and some shops at train stations. Shops close early on Saturdays in smaller towns like Freital, Meissen and Plauen - some at noon, some at 4 pm. Larger shopping malls are open until 8 pm on Saturdays. The Altmarkt gallery shopping centre in Dresden's city centre in open until 9 pm from Monday to Saturday.

If you're here in three weeks that means it will be Christmas time - and in some towns shops will be open on Sundays, too. But I don't have an idea yet where exactly. Christmas Markets will definitely be open (and crowded) on Sundays.

Restaurants? My gosh, I have no idea. Never had a meal in Freital. I am sure, though, that you'll find decent restaurants - just nothing fancy. They do have pizzerias, Greek restaurants, German restaurants etc.

As for Plauen - I've only been for a day trip. It is famous for the lace manufactures and I think there is a museum about it there. Otherwise ... no idea.

Ingo, so sorry for all the loud screaming. You are so valuable on this board!

You guessed it, I am going to Freital to check out their porcelain. I love German porcelain. I want to check out all my options and prices.

If you think of anything else that can help me. Please, share.

Thanks for all your input.

The Freital porcelain manufacture has a new shop right next to the Frauenkirche in Dresden. They're open Mon - Sat 10 am - 8 pm. I guess you know that they offer guided tours of their manufacture and showrooms Monday to Friday at 11 am and 2 pm?

Unfortunately there is nothing more to see and do in Freital than I listed above.

For more information on Plauen go to
www.plauen.de and click on the small British flag on the left.

Don't miss the porcelain museum while you are in Dresden

Ingo, thanks for all your input especially on Freital, I am thinking
I might not go and use that time somewhere else like Chemnitz. I will pe passing it when I go to Plaun. Can you give me any input on that?

Wanderfrau, thanks for the link to Plauen. I had been there already.
It seems like that site is not complete yet.

Thank you both for your help and your time.

Chemnitz ... well, nobody would say it's a beautiful city. LOL It was heavily bombed in WWII and not much in the city centre was rebuilt. However, it does have a lot of interesting things to see. By incident I have been there just a few weeks ago.

- Museum Gunzenhauser. A stunning collection of 20th century pictures. Otto Dix, Blauer Reiter, Die Brücke e.g. (the city gallery has another collection of the latter)
- Saxon Industry museum. Very interesting if you're into technical stuff and especially textile industry. They even show you old techniques.
- The Schlossberg church (a gothic church with stunning single pieces) and the neighbouring historical museum, very interesting.
- Villa Esche, an icon of Art Nouveau architecture by van der Velde

If you're looking for a picturesque old town then I highly recommend Freiberg, a few miles from Freital and on the way to Plauen. Gorgeous cathedral, very interesting city museum (esp. on mining, but also works of art), the very recently opened greatest mineral exhibit in the world (yes, it's true and absolutely amazing) in the Renaissance castle, beautiful townhouses from Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque ... and an Art Deco style coffeehouse not to miss: Cafe Hartmann (just off the old market square).
