Info on Podstine Hotel Annex Hvar?

I have been getting so much great information for our trip in September 2007. Thank you!

We have booked with the Podstine Hotel in Hvar for September. They only have sea view rooms available in the new annex they are building (should be done April 2007). Does anyone have any information on what this annex is like? We really wanted to stay in this hotel, but if the annex isn't as nice (views, etc..) as the hotel, perhaps we should search for other accomodations? Any advice would be welcome!

Bec,

There are many new properties that are now avaialable on Hvar that you might want to check into that are much closer to the town itself. But of course I am not sure what kind of atmosphere you may want, you may want to be further away from the action.

In any event, you can look at this website:

http://www.suncanihvar.com

We stayed at the Riva and loved it this past summer.

You will love Hvar!!!

Wen you are ready to ask, many of us ( seems like half the Fodors board!) were in Croatia this past summer and fall and we all would be happy to provide you with logistics, dining, sightseeing, etc.

Just let us know!!

Tripgirl, thank you for your reply. There is such a wealth of information on this site that you all have already helped a ton... you just didn't know it!

I read that Podstine was a 15/20 minute walk from town? It just looked like a cool getaway spot yet close enough to wander to town.

I looked at the link you provided. Frankly, I'd read such mixed reviews of their hotels I got a little scared off. Maybe I'll continue the research.

Thanks so much for your offer of help. I'm sure, as I get closer, I'll have lots of questions. It is killing me that I'm not going until September. I think I've booked all I can, or want to for now. Too early to book the train or cheap flights between countries.

Here is more detail on our trip...
Fly to Prague, stay 3 nights
Fly or train to Budapest, stay 3 nights
Fly to Dubrovnik, stay 3 nights
Car to Hvar, stay 3 nights
Then... 2 nights free and fly out of Zagreb.

How funny, I didn't realize everything was 3 nights!

Some of the hotels in the collection are indeed redone, the Adriatic and Riva are brand new. The Amphora, parts of it I think are still undergoing some constrction.

Yes, the Podstine is more like a 25 minute walk. Not sure what you like, but we really loved being right inthe heart of the action.

The Palace will not be ready until 2008 so I would skip that one.

Do you need your car from Dubrovnik to Hvar? We had a car from Zagreb to Dubrovnik so we took in the magnificent coast, but I think you might have a little hassle with the ferry for your car. And you really do not need need a car on Hvar, unless you do want to go exploring all over the island. But that of course is up to you.

We love to drive all around Europe, not scared, so I am usually in the camp of having a car, but I think for Hvar it may not be necessary.

Anyway, you'll find the people who respond to questions on Croatia are a great bunch ( all of fodors is actually, but the "Croatia" gang are special IMHO!)

Our plan is to pick up our car as we head out of Dubrovnik. We want to take our time driving to Hvar. We will drive to Drevnik and take the short, 30 minute ferry to the island. Then take our time exploring Hvar and getting to Podstine. I know that we won't need a car on the island, but we also have two free days and having a car will allow us to go or do whatever we feel like. Plus, I think we can get a pretty good deal on the car. And, I have to admit, I like the idea of not having to deal with luggage on the bus.

As for where to stay in Hvar, I like being in town. But, we're also looking for a little romanctic spot. With all the eating and drinking I plan to be doing, a decent walk a couple of times a day is probably a good thing! Hotel Podstine is also a little less expensive than the Riva, etc..

Did you dive in Croatia? That was kind of what sealed the deal for where we're staying. From what I can tell, Viking Diving is their dive shop and looks to be a pretty good one.

bec,

then you have a good plan with your car and you'll be fine. We loved driving the coast.

we are not divers; kind of loungers if you will, we love sunning ourselves and not much big on diving. But I know that people love it there.

When you are ready to ask more questions, please do not hestitate to return here and ask!

Very comfortable apartments just around the corner from Podstine Hotel. Much more economical too. Could try Viskovic apt for info.

I'm just bumping this to see if anyone has visited recently and can comment on Hotel Podstine? I've been reading a few negative reviews on the construction. We are booked there in September and hoping all will be finished then. But, I don't want to be stuck in the annex if it isn't worth it.

We are staying in private apartments everywhere else. This was kind of our splurge of the trip because I loved the look of the Podstine. Amfora is also under construction and I'm not sure I want the a huge resort feel.

I guess I'm just second guessing our reservations and not sure what to do about it!!

becnsteve,

Hey again, glad you broughtup your old post.

As I mentioned to you last yr, we stayed right onthe harbour front at the Hotel riva; it does not have a large resort feel, rather a hip vibe; not sure you are into that kind of atmosphere, but I htought I'd bring it up again, since you are second guessing the Podstine.

I know a few Fodorites have stayed at the Podstine, but since it was a 25 minute walk from the action ( we are walkers, mind you, but we wanted to be inthe thick of things), I did not choose it.

Anyway, let us know what you decide.
