did this off a Princess cruise a few years ago from Livorno
simply go to the train station cheapest hop a REGIONAL train
for a couple of euro per hour 4 euro or so for me last.
just buy from machine at station if no reservation be sure
and convalidate(stamp) your ticket prior to hopping on.
trenitalia.it will have schedules but a nightmare to book
abroad big shippping charges just wait...
Happy Travels!

Hi, Luftmench
if you go to www.trenitalia.com and put in your dates and times, you will find that there are hourly trains from Livorno to florence, leaving at 10 mins past the hour and arriving at about 1 hr 20 mins later.
so the 9.10 leaves Livorno centrale at 9.10 and arrives at Firenze SMN [the main station in Florence] at 10.30; the 10.10 arrives at 11.30 etc.
if you caught the 9.10 you'd have oodles of time to walk to the uffizi but if you catch the 10.10 you'd need a taxi - official ones go from straight outside the station to the left as you are leaving the trains and shouldn't cost more than about €10. 2nd class train tickets - [the only ones available on the 9.10 and really all you need, though on the 10.10 you could pay a bit extra for 1st class if you like] are €6.80 each, each way. so a return is €13.40. it would be about €20 each 1st class.
as others have said, no need to book tickets, just turn up and buy from the machines or at the ticket office. but don't forget to validate you ticket as you get on - the little yellow machines are on the platform as you approach the train.
if you have a lot of time when you get to Florence, I suggest getting your return tickets [if you have only bought one way ones at Livorno] before you leave the station. then if you are in a rush to cat the train back, you will only have to validate the tickets before you get on.
