I am not sure of driving distances but Ihave been to Cesky Krumov and its a gorgeous town to spend a day in. If you can do what you want to do in Salzburg and still I hvae time, and the driving isnt too far, its worth it. ALSO in Salzburg, the Ice Caves are SPECTACULAR and well worth the trip.

Im back.... 2 days isnt long in Salzburg for a first visit. SO if you want to see it properly and do a couple of the side trips you might want to extend your time. Do the ice caves if you can.... loved it there.

I want to see the salt mines and ice caves from Salzburg. We also have a 4 year old - are these trips ok with a kid?

Including the city points of interest, a few driving trips outside the city (a mini Sound of Music drive) and the above trips, I could easily fill up 3 days is my guess.

I am veering to the idea that CK will probably have to wait for another trip.

Salt mines are fine with a 4 year old. That is the minimum age for some of them.

our tour of the ice caves included several parents carrying their young children. There are 700 steps up, so I don't think a 4yo could do that on their own, but if you're willing to carry them they'd be fine. Also, the hike up to the entrance is steep and long, but I really pitied the people who were trying to push strollers up that path - maybe you can take your time hiking and/or carry the child partway?

make sure you bring warm layers for the cave - it's 0 degrees in there! All the upward climbing warms you up for the first half, but coming back down you can get rather cold.

forgot to say we went to the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen, and it was the highlight of our time in the Salzkammergut. Great views on the hike, including of the old castle (Hohenwerfen), and the cave itself was beautiful.

There's also an ice cave near Hallstatt, I believe.

another thing your 4yo might enjoy is the summer roddelbahn in Strobl - this could be combined with a trip to Sts. Gilgen/Wolfgang, as they're all on the same road. Or if you're not going that direction, there are other roddelbahns, including in Berchtesgaden.

We (two 30-somethings) did the one in Strobl and had a great time - it was a lot of fun, and the views over Wolfgangsee as you're towed up the hill are spectacular!

Yes, I believe there is an ice cave/hole/something near Hallstatt, and I believe it is not as challenging (the long hikes, stairs, etc).
