In the Cinqueterre is it possible to have dinner in another village?

We'll be staying in Monterrossa for 2 nights. Would be possible to have dinner in another of the villages and get back to Monterrossa? How late do the trains and ferries operate in early October?

Absolutely, that is how you do it! The trains run up til about midnight. You can check www.trenitalia.com site with specific dates in October and get a print out with the cities (i.e. Monterosso to Riomaggiore). Otherwise, you can see the times posted in each station next to the train ticket office. Boats don't run at night (past dusk) so that won't be an option. I will be in Monterosso and plan to eat dinner in Manarola, also in Vernazza, Levanto, etc.

Huitres, what's your favorite spot? Can you suggest a wonderful, romantic spot with a great view? Do you think we will be able to eat outdoors in early Oct?

Yes. When we stayed in Levanto last September, the last train from Vernazza left at 10:59. Check your timetables, but it's easy to do (unless you have incredibly slow service like our restaurant provided that evening).

The many seaside restaurants in Vernazza (the next town down from Monterosso) are very romantic. Vernazza's medieval town square faces the ocean and there is an old castle on one side and an old church on the other. At night, several restaurants have outdoor seating in this square - beautiful view and very romantic There is also a restaurant on top of the old castle but I believe you need reservations there.

I have a couple favorites!

In Riomaggiore, the first is "Ripa al Sole", located up off Via Gasperi overlooking the town. You can either walk up the main street through Riomaggiore, or take the shuttle bus up. It is a lovely restaurant with 4* quality and delicious food - specialty is seafood. The second is "La Grotta" right at the base of Via Gasperi as you first enter Riomaggiore (from the train station, you walk through the tunnel and come out to Via Gasperi, turn L and restaurant will be on your R). It is built inside of an ancient cave that was a pirate hideout, the interior hasn't been modified too much so it has a very intimate feeling to it. You could get a table towards the back so it will feel more private. Delicious food!

In Manarola, my favorite is "Il Porticello" on the street that heads down to the harbor front. If you are on that street, it is on your R side. Likewise, if you walk the Via Dell'More from Riomaggiore to Manarola, you come out of the tunnel and turn L and head down, restaurant on R side.

There are more in each town, I can't remember other names off the top of my head. There is a nice restaurant on the boardwalk in Monterosso al mare, I plan to return there too!

Specialties of the CT area are, of course, seafood; and pesto dishes. The grilled fish plate, gamberi (shrimp), scallops, tonno (tuna) are all delicious. Insalata di mare (seafood salad) is a delicious antipasto, Trofie al pesto (pasta with pesto and pine nuts) is delicious as a "primi" dish.
