In a Jam. Need Help Getting From Krakow To Budapest
I have another thread posted here because Vienna is hosting a gigantic Soccer event the same week end we had plans to be there. We don't want to go to any other small charming Austrian Villages instead. We're doing that the week before we get to Vienna. We have decided to go to Krakow, but thatnks to some posters here, I now know that it's really far from Budapest, which is our last stop and where we fly home from. Even though it's really far from Budapest we would like to go there anyway. Can anyone here tell me, (with certainty) how long a drive or how long for the train? Flying is out. It's just too expensive and none of the budget airlines line up right. Thanks in advance

Thank you for your replies. I hate to spend an entire day on the train. I guess the overnight train (which I hate) is still our best bet. When we were in Krakow before we took the night train to Prague. I bought the tickets from a father & son in Florida. Does anyone know who I'm thinking of? I lost the info and don't know how I could look it up in the search here. It was in 2003 and I planned the whole year before. I would still like to know real driving time, if qanyone knows. Thanks

Train timetables are on line at www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml This shows the Eurocity 383 leaving at 12:10, not 09:53. The night train is 22:25 to 08:32 and isn't a Eurocity or Intercity.

Thanks to all of you and especially to TomBoy for the exact driving time. I think if there is somewhere to stop that is tourist worthy, then 6 to 7 hours isn't such a bad thing. Are there villages or small towns worth stopping in, on the route, and if no one knows, do you know how I could research it myself? I think Malev may cost too much, but will check the 1 way price. I already know that none of the whichbudget.com budget airlines will work. Thanks.

In the directions section enter Krakow Poland and Budapest Hungary; then when asked, select Krakow-Malopolski (#1)
You'll see it's a pretty direct route, but there's not oodles of interest along the way...you'd have to divert 50 miles east or west to see more interesting stuff. It's somewhat similar to driving thru central to southern OH-IN-IL, maybe a smidgeon more hilly.

I'm still not sure, but my BIL and DH are leaning towards just flying, whatever the cost. I don't want to waste a day on the road, especially if the stops aren't fascinating, when I could spend them in Krakow or Budapest. It really is a hassle, isn't it? I wonder why Budapest & Krakow are always lumped together as consecutive spots to visit. Some places make sense. Berlin & Amsterdam. Munich & Vienna. I don't get it!

Its crazy! When I put Budapest in the search box here, I can't even begin to tell you how many times the word Krakow comes up,followed by Budapest! It also says Vienna & Prague, but I don't have to think about those places this trip. And by the time we check in at the airport, stop in Warsaw, change planes, get our luggage, we probably will be at 6 hours spent!

The night train may be your best option. I don't know how much it costs but the schedule is good. No connections.

I took the night train in the late 90s and slept like a baby--and it's gotta be better now. In fact, it was one of my more memorable train rides for the scenery--farm houses and mist rising off the river at sunrise.

AA, Thanks for your help. I really hate those sleeper cars. If only they came with private toilets. Call me queasy, but when we took the night train from Krakow to Prague the looks and smell of our (shared, for the car) toilet were beyond disgusting. Going outside would have been nicer! I worked in health care for over 25 years, so it takes a lot to gross me out. It's the only thing that makes sense, time and money wise, but...I hate it. I think I need a conference with my family and let the majority decide. Thanks for all your help.
