I just read the post on what to expect for a $500.00 dinner in Paris. This got me thinking that I might rather have a wonderful hamper packed by la Grande Epicerie or the food hall at Harrods...humm...First I just love those lovely wicker English hampers. What would you pack in a hamper like this? (Caution, this is trivial travel subject!)

Not wishing in any way to take the wind out of your sails but you may be interested to read this article from Saturday's Independent:-

As a taster I'll give you the headline:-
"Hamper wars: Harrods and Fortnums battle to outdo each other with £5,000 Christmas baskets" [!!!!!!]
Makes your $500 budget look a trifle parsimonious? Just console yourself with the thought of MK2 and ThinGorjus getting caught in the stampede!

Ok, this has always been on my list of food fantasies. I find a picnic with great food and a romantic location better than a fancy restaurant. I just don't know what all I would put in the basket...I know it would be possible to fill the basket at Harrods.
Any ideas?

That's easy. Assuming the cost of the hamper is already paid for:
Decent bottle of champagne $100
Nice bottle of red wine $60
Nice bottle of white wine $60
Fiji Water $10
Bloc Foie Goose Foie Gras $80
Nice Fresh French Bread
& assorted crackers $6
Assorted Excellent Cheeses $25
Side of Wild Smoked Salmon $25
Organic fruit selection $20
Cold Organic Chicken and
gourmet side salads $60
Various Desserts $25
Coffee in Flask $10
Chocolates $20

Oh I'd just have a bottle of vintage champagne, some wild strawberries, with very good cream.
I'm not a picnic person really. The hampers in the thousands contain so many things I wouldn't eat. They have so many pies, pates (I'm being lazy, so excuse the lack of accents), pickles, and other things that one would never eat ordinarily.
I remember many years ago I was bought a large hamper from Harrods, I gave most of the things away. They really are a waste of money. Far better to spend it on some clothes.

AnnieP,
Yum! But I think I would up the chocolate $$$ and subtract from something else. Just what, I am not sure. You have good taste. I know we spent a very long time at the chocolate counters this past May in Harrods.

We have a picnic every summer near where I live. Its in the grounds of restored house, Boscobel and it overlooks the Hudson, its gorgeous. So I have lots of practice. We have fun making it as nice as possible, always with nice wine glasses, white tableclothes covered with Indian red and gold silk gauze, cushions, the whole deal. Its a lot of fun!

Well, here are the contents of the Harrods hamper for 5000GBP:
The king of hampers. The Chairman's Choice takes gourmet eating to a new height, with the most luxurious of offerings: Beluga caviar, Duck Foie Gras, Game Pie stuffed with Cranberries, Tesseron Cognac, Fresh Quail Eggs, Criollo Pralines, French Woodcutter's cake dipped in chocolate... the list is long and lavish. Even the extras sound like a Christmas wish-list, from the Silver Ice Bucket, Sterling Silver Mounted Blossom Vase and Champagne Flutes to the luxury Christmas Crackers.
So you see, the extras like glassware are all very well and good, but a waste of time. The food is all pies, and foie gras etc.
It's a nice thing to receive as a gift because it's so useless, and one would have fun with it, and probably half the perishable contents would end up fed to the dog.
