If We Have Time To Eat...London Restaurant Suggestions?
Even though we have 131 sights we want to see in our 3 1/2 days in London, I guess we still have to eat.
Just wondering what are some of your current (or semi-current) favorites?
Although we are staying in South Kensington, we will travel anywhere (within reason) for good food.
Price doesn't matter (well, just not too crazy). We have to conserve some funds for the remainder of our trip. We are not really into fancy (we never bring enough nice clothes for fancy, anyway)...just great food.
Favorite fish and chips place? Favorite Indian restaurant (I know only 5,000 to choose from)? Italian? French? Pub food? There is no cuisine off the board (well, except American...I get enough of that here). Thanks.
Oh, maybe an update on favorite pubs. Historic pubs? Pubs with unique interiors? Last time someone suggested Ye Olde Mitre (great to call).

Two favorites of mine; Black Roe in Mayfair. Fantastic Asia Pacific fare; poke, and other items. Great cocktails as well. And one of my top five favorite restaurants on earth, Merchant's Tavern in Shoreditch. Be sure to have the foie gras and quail starter. The fried oysters are also amazing.

We've tried a lot of different Fish & Chips places and always find that Masters' Super Fish near Waterloo is our favorite.
We had a very good seafood meal at J Sheeky Atlantic Bar, which is not the main restaurant. More casual, a very little less expensive but totally delicious with good service.
We had lunch at Gymkhana but I wasn't transformed. It was good but not great.
Salt Yard and Picture were sort of newfangled small plates places. I liked Salt Yard better; we ate at it's sister restaurant, Opera Tavern, in May and liked it a lot.
Also last May we ate at Palomar, which was outstanding. Waited to long to get a res this February.
Hope this helps a little.

Perhaps consider Turkish food? We can't get that where we live, so I seek it out. We've been to Tas Pide, across the street from the Globe Theater, and loved it:

There is another Tas restaurant close to the British Museum where I ate on a business dinner. Everyone enjoyed it.
Great pubs around the British Museum also. Looking at the map I may have been in the Museum Tavern, the Plough and several others in between.
Have fun!

Thanks you guys...keep 'em coming. This will keep me busy. I have three other hungry mouths to feed on this trip.
Debit...we'll be there in May and then on to Edinburgh and follow that up by terrorizing people as we drive through the Scottish countryside.

Yes, agree about the Wolseley. We missed Brasserie Zedel although it was on the list for our visit last May. We enjoyed dinner at the Princess Louise Pub on High Holborn not far from the British Museum. I had an organic cherry beer which DH informed me did not really count as beer.
I wanted to recommend the Dalloway Terrace at the Holborn Hotel but see they will be closed for a couple of months.

We had a lovely dinner outside so I hope they don't change the atmosphere. Perhaps it will be reopened by the time you visit.
I have enjoyed your trip reports of France and hope to follow your British sojourn as well.

Marianne in Notting Hill is our favourite restaurant.
The India beside Cannon Street station is great for Indian. So is Rajasthan by Monument station.
The Princess of Shoreditch is a great gastro pub.
The Swan on southbank is a good choice with lovely views.
Roast at Borough Market is delicious.

I'm not so keen on Zedel; great value and a great room, but not crazy about the food. All perfectly nice, but we live in Belgium and get overdosed on French food here.
The small cabaret space there, now called 'Live at Zedel', is one of our favorite places in London though.
We absolutely loved Palomar recently - was recommended here on Fodors. Casual, small place - wonderful food. Practically licked our plates clean..
Honey & Co is great too - both do Middle Eastern food.
Had a very enjoyable lunch recently at 108 Garage on Golborne Road (north of Notting Hill), if you haven't been go on a Friday or Saturday when there's the market there.
Jamikins - haven't been to Marianne, but have passed the restaurant a few times. Looks very expensive. Perhaps good to try for lunch.

Hi Tulip - definitely not a budget option, but they do a smaller set lunch now that would be a cheaper option than their full tasting menu.
I haven't been to Palomar, sounds like a good place to try!

The two favorite restaurants from our trip to London last year were Medlar and John Doe. Medlar was as good as anywhere we ate in Paris and had a well priced lunch menu. And John Doe had a unique barbecue technique where everything was fascinatingly smoky.

We will be in London in May as well. I second Judy's suggestion for"at Borough Market, the Kappacasien food stall has the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had!".
We also enjoyed Medlar and John Doe. Another place we will try to return to is Barrafina. We were lucky enough to get seats near the hot food line- dinner & a show!!

I had one of those in 2013 and look forward to eating another 3,000 calorie sandwich on this trip.

The BBar next to The Rubens at the Palace near Victoria Station has a very nice ambience and a South African themed menu. I like it. www.bbarlondon.com
