My husband and I (we are in our early 30's) took our 20 month old and 5 year old to Iceland for a week in November 2016. We were very hesitate but in the end...best decision ever! I fell in love with the country - it was peaceful, quaint and insanely beautiful.

I loved going in November for several reasons:
1. Seeing Iceland covered in snow was gorgeous
2. There weren't a lot of tourists so we felt like locals
3. The weather was too frigid, in the 30's, so with proper attire we were fine
4. It rained while we were there, and washed away the snow, so we got to see it green as well
5. The prices were much more economical

We spent a week in Iceland and mostly stuck to the west and south. Our basic Itinerary is:
Day 1: Arrival / Reykjavík
Day 2: Into the Glacier Tour / Fossatún
Day 3: Snæfellsnes Peninsula / Fossatún
Day 4: Selfoss*
Day 5: Golden Circle Tour / Vík*
Day 6: Jökulsárlón Lagoon / Selfoss
Day 7: Selfoss to KEF / Departure

We rented a car and stayed mostly in cottages or cabins (no hotels) to give us multiple bedrooms with kids. Some even had hot tubs. It was definitely the way to go! We loved having a kitchen and made dinner several times in our places.

The highlights of our trip we the Into the Glacier Tour, going inside the cave with the waterfall, and seeing Jökulsárlón Lagoon (what I consider the most beautiful piece of earth I have seen to date). The Into the Glacier tour takes you inside a manmade ice cave and was definitely worth the cost & time - very impressive (and its only ice cave tour that allows kids!)

We had a great time swimming in the geothermal pools and lagoons with the kids, exploring the cities, and feeding the Icelandic horses. There was a lot to do with our kids, and we really enjoyed being with them and sharing in these moments!

If you are planning to take your toddler or young kids to Iceland it is very thorough and worth a look. I definitely recommend Iceland as a family vacation. It may not be somewhere you think to take the kids, but we really enjoyed showing our kids how beautiful it was. In Iceland, our kids got to be kids and enjoy the nature around them. I can't wait to go back!

Excellent blog, thanks for posting. We're headed to Iceland in May - no kids, but you've provided some very useful info for families.

I've gone into sticker shock while doing my research on Iceland - I can't imagine having to feed a family there.

Lucky you getting to check in so early - we will arrive early am too, but unlikely we can check in as a busier time of year!
