Iceland Tour Help

My husband and I are visiting Iceland for five days in early July and trying to determine if we should stay in Reykjavik
and do day trips (in which case what do you suggest) or if we should travel elsewhere for a couple of days and stay elsewhere for a night or two.

Also ... any recommendations for tour companies (there seem to be alot but little info - we'd prefer not get stuck in a souvenir shop for an hour as part of our "tour")?
