Iceland northern light trip - tour package or self decide itinerary
As mentioned in topic, should i opt for a tour package for the northern light trip or should I plan the itinerary by myself. I have found some from icelandairline.co.uk a few but they were too expansive. Any recommendation or suggesting with planning to Iceland for northern light?
I am interested with the Golden Circle, Northern light as well as Blue Lagoon. If i have a chance, I might want to go to Akureyri.
Please and thank you !!

how long do you have for your trip?
I think that you would find that once you got to Reykjavik there would be lots of tours to see the northern lights and the golden circle, also Akureyri.
Why not look at the Icelandic tourist board website?
sorry if you know this already, but of course you have to go in the winter to see the Northern lights.

you haven't told us which tour companies you've looked at.
this one is based in the UK i think but can't see any reason why you shouldn't join in with it:

they have lots of other packages if that's the way you want to go. When we were there [albeit that was just before the economic crash so things may have changed] Iceland was pretty expensive even for independent travellers so a package may not be as expensive as you think.

I've looked up tour packages from air iceland.
There's more than one company running tours. Don't know how the tours can be too "expansive" but if you meant expensive, then that should not shock you = Iceland is not inexpensive generally.

Dear Samantha,
i hope this won't be take the wrong way, but we seem to be doing more work on this than you do! you need to do some homework - cost out your flight and hotel, as against the package to see how much extra the excursions they are offering are worth, and then work out if it's worth your while to pay that much over the odds.
it's not rocket science.
you can google "flights from X to Iceland" [i think that quite a lot of n. american airlines stop off there] and see what deals are available, and then look at booking.com for example to price hotels in Reykjavik.
just looking at Air Iceland is not going to give you the full picture.

I am doing my homework, I just didn't post it here. I am busy at the moment with the searching as well as my packings. That is why my answers are short. I am just asking for opinion which is better because I might be looking at the expensive ones and missed out the cheaper one. Also, those who had went there before and have experience with bookings might gave me some tips what to avoid and what not to avoid.
I do not know understand why are you guys has to be sarcastic. This is a forum to ask for suggestion or tips, so here I am asking. Also, you do not need to be so sarcastic about my spelling mistake as I am under a lot of pressure lately, mistakes tends to happen. You could just point out that I've made a spelling mistake. You guys can be more considerate when giving advice or suggestion.
@Annhig
By the way, I am not from the states. And yes I do use booking.com and had been googling with flights as well. I am looking mostly at Air Iceland because this is the most popular ones over here in London and apparently is the cheapest one. I find it expensive because it cost a lot just for 4 days to travel in Europe. I do not know that the price i found was actually not expensive nor cheap for Iceland. Of course, everyone would want to go for the cheaper one and so here I am, asking which is better.

samantha, we are not mind readers. we are not paid for the assistance that so many fodorites give willingly to other travellers. how would we know whether what we might suggest would be cheaper than what you have found unless you tell us? That is no sarcasm, just a plain fact.
i don't understand why you would not post what you had discovered so far, so that we could give you the best possible help. for example, where you were from, what package companies you had looked at, when you were going, etc. etc.
as for the flights being expensive, not many airlines fly to Iceland. to look for cheap flights, try skyscanner.
good luck!

Next time we go to Iceland we will reserve our plane flight and first two nights hotel in advance and figure out the rest when we get there based on weather. Reykjavik reminded me of Peru - there seemed to be a lot of tour desks ready to take you wherever you wanted to go.
