Iceland itinerary help!

Jump to last reply

I am going to Iceland with my boyfriend for 8 nights/9 days in August. We've done lots of research, and here's the itinerary we've come up with. Is it feasible? What would you add or take away? We've rented a car with 4wd... I've posted this in a couple places, and I would really appreciate your feedback!

Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavik early - head to our hotel, spend the day exploring Reykjavik, night there

Day 2: Depart Reykjavik - Golden Circle sites - spend the night somewhere along the F35 (camping - recommendations?) Maybe at Hveravellir? Are we missing out by not taking the ring road through the west?

Day 3: Take the F35 up to Myatvn area. Night here. (do we have time for a rafting trip stop? the 3-4 hour one?)

Day 4: Explore the Myatvn area. Second night here.

Day 5: morning in Myatvn area again - drive over and spend the night in Berunes.

Day 6: Depart eastern fjords - drive through Hofn and spend the night in Skaftafell.

Day 7: Spend time in Skaftafell area, drive to Landmannalauger. spend the night here.

Day 8: Explore Landmannalauger, spend the night in Hella or somewhere nearby.

Day 9: Drive to Blue Lagoon, fly out at 5 pm

Too ambitious?

    hi icelandsoon,

I think I see what Gildo is saying, but I'm not sure that I agree with him. the fact is that the golden circle is sort of out of the way whichever way round you go, so you have to fit it in somewhere, and your way is as good as any.

in fact the most obvious route is indeed to go round anticlockwise, but starting striaght from the airport - you could head striaght for Vik from there, thence to Jokulsarlon to see the iceberg lagoon, Hoefn, the eastern lagoons, myvatn,, Aykureri, the golden circle, Reykjavik, home.

we had about 10 days and didn't make it all the way round, but had we known what we know now, we would have done jsut what you are planning to do, but somehow fitting in the western fjords, which are just gorgeous.

my family did the river rafting and you will have plenty of time to fit it in. Iceland is a funny place - there are some lovely bits, but much of what is in between is pretty grim. so most people find themselves driving longer distances than they normally would, to get between the attractions.

if you click on my name, you will find a link to the trip we made last year.

    good luck,

    regards, ann
