Iceland Isafjorour Peninsula or Akureyri area

Jump to last reply

I'm planning a last minute trip to Iceland in June. We will be in country for 8 days and trying to see as much as possible of this beautiful landscape, nature, and country. We are more interested in seeing the land, rather than the city (although we'd like to spend a half a day or a day in Reykjavik). We're hoping to experience some of the most picturesque natural parks and areas (icy areas, green covered areas), volcanic mud and hot springs, the black sands and puffins, etc. Overall i'm having a hard time deciding if we should include Isafjorour Peninsula in our trip AND/OR Akureyri area and if visiting these areas is going to be much different than the reyjkavik and south/southwest shore areas.

We are thinking
A) if we should have rejikvek as our 'base' for sleeping, and then go on day trips from there, then either drive or fly to the peninsula (isafjorour) / westfjords for a couple days.

or

B) if we should drive from reykjavik along the southwest side of the country, stopping over night and sightseeing along the way and then flying to the peninsula (isafjorour) / westfjords for a couple days.

or

C) if we should drive from reykjavik along the southwest side of the country, stopping over night and sightseeing along the way and then flying to Akureyri for a couple days.

or

D) if we should have rejikvek as our 'base' for sleeping, and then go on day trips from there, then either drive or fly to Akureyri for a couple days.

Or perhaps there is a way to combine 1) isafjorour peninsula, 2) Akureyri, 3) reykjavik area AND the 4) southwest shore into our trip. Perhaps it's ambitious, but we're up for making the most of this short trip!

Any thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome! thanks!
