I am considering going to Iceland the first week of May. I have read minimally about going there at this time. Will we be able to drive around all of Iceland, or will the weather keep us in just the capital at this time of year?

We were there last year at the end of May. It was nice but there were some roads in the mountains(where you probably would not go to anyhow) that were closed. It was so wonderful that we are planning on going back next year. What a country!
You got that right....What a country. My wife and i went there in July 2010 just months after the volcano blew. We got to see the effects of it without it disrupting our trip. I finally found a place that could knock off Japan as my favorite place.
