Iceland in late March - Ring Road Open?

I would LOVE to go to Iceland for my 50th birthday (Mar 28. 2011), so tentatively planning a trip for the last week of March / first week of April. My SO and I love landscapes, scenery, etc., and Iceland sounds absolutely beautiful! We don't mind driving -- and since we never know where the road will take us (let me rephrase that to, "we never know how far down the road we'll get" depending on what captures our interest along the way), we don't esp. like to make advanced reservations, but realize we sometimes have to depending on the season (that is, if we want a room someplace.)

So -- is the Ring Road open in late March / early April? If it's not, how much of Iceland would we be able to see that time of year (for a 10-to-12 day trip?) If it is, what are some sights to see along the route? THANKS!
