Iceland for a guy's trip away from Maryland in May? Good month to go? Which hotel? Or go somewhere else????

Jump to last reply

A bunch of us guys take a trip each year together and we're thinking about Iceland for mid-May, leaving on a Thursday morning and returning Sunday eve. The last 2 years we did Jazzfest in New Orleans and we had this crazy idea to go to Iceland this time. Is mid-May a decent time to go or is it cold and bleak and dark? We didn't want to go at absolute peak in summer time as the airfare will be really high and it'll be filled with tourists and kids. Should we go mid-June instead? The reason we picked Iceland is because we need a non-stop flight from BWI or Washington DC or Dulles and Iceland fits the bill. Non stop flights are great, if you know what I mean! Makes a short trip much less of a hassle.

I've heard that the airfares are similar to flying to New Orleans pricewise, which is a big part of the "deal" for us. We'd also though about doing Prague or Amsterdam for this Thurs-Sunday trip, but I don't think it would be as cheap or offer a non-stop flight.

OR, can you think of another cool place to go on a non-stop flight from Maryland that would be equally as interesting?

If we do pick Iceland, would June or July be MUCH better? Are there "must see" festivals that go on at a particular time of year you "just gotta go to"? We're into seeing some natural wonders and checking out the city. None of us drink so the bar scene isn't appealing to us. We're about 38-46 y.o. each.

We usually do Sheraton Hotels when we travel here in the US. Is there something of this caliber there you'd recommend? We want something NICE! Typically we spend between $110-180 per room per night and then split the room, 2 in a room. We've of course used Priceline whenever possible, too. For our NYC guy's trip away, we did the Sheraton in Times Square and had a blast.

So, what do you think? Is this trip doable for such a short time away? Or do you recommend another spot? We actually considered Las Vegas too, but it's much less appealing to me personally compared to the natural beauty of Iceland. Also, I don't gamble so sin city would just be OK.

Thanks Fodorites. I await your sage advice. You are our travel agent, as usual!
