Two friends and I will be in Iceland for two days in mid-October. We would like to see the city on one day and do a nature/adventure tour the other. However, we would like to see as much as possible in our time there and would like to avoid a bus tour or anything too touristy. Any suggestions on packaged tours, or should we rent a car and go out on own? Thanks!
Iceland for 2 days...

Melissa,
I asked pretty much the same questions earlier this year. Try doing a search on Iceland.
We will be stopping off in Reykjavik for two or three days on our way to Scotland at the end of October. We determined from the info we got that if you want to see the countryside then you need to rent a car.
IcelandAir has a brochure that includes nature/adventure tours. Try their web page: icelandair.com . Their pony trekking looks pretty good.
There are also many Icelandic web pages to get info off of. Try glaciertours.com or vefur.is/iceland/ .
I know that this is not 'first hand knowledge', but I hope it helps.

Hope this info doesn't arrive too late.
We too are heading to Iceland (this weekend) and having been there before have an idea of how we are going to spend our brief time there this jaunt.
The only thing we missed last time was Gulfoss. We are going there this trip. I have heard this is a can't miss and am embarassed that we didn't make it there last year.
Rekjyavik is quite managable in a short bit of time (or longer if you had the luxury).
The Blue Lagoon is one of those must see tourist traps. It is almost surreal and the drive out there is an experience unto itself.
If you have time and inclination to ride the horses I would. We are not expert riders by any means and found them easy to ride and the staff at the farm we went to were more than willing to help. And if you are daring those babies can fly!
The bus tours didn't look fun at all so I'd go for the car if I were you. The rates are reasonable and there aren't really too many roads to get lost on.
Hope this helps. Have fun and maybe we'll run in to you.

Marc,
Thank you. Your info is very helpful to me. We plan on going to the Blue Lagoon on our way to the airport so that we have two full days to see the Reykjavik area.
